  3. Spartan resources • Laconia and Messenia has many natural resources: • Iron, lead • Crops • Fruit orchards • Livestock (sheep and goats) • Pigs and hens • Game animals (for hunting) • Bees • Timber and stone • Fish and shellfish (dye)

Main historical events – 1000 – 371 BCE • First occupied by a Mycenaean people • They were displaced by invading Dorian tribes (Spartans) • Dorians took control of the land and enslaved the native helots (of the city Helos) • 8th century BCE Sparta invaded and incorporated neighbouring Messenia • Laconia and Messenia was called “Lacedaemon” • Spartans werer “Lacedaemonians” • By the 6th century BCE a new Sparta had emerged with a new social system. 750 BCE First Messenian War - The inhabitants of Sparta organize their society on military lines - Lycrugus 650 BCE The inhabitants of Messenia revolt against Spartan rule and are reduced to the status of helots 2nd Messenian War 706 BCE Tarentum in Magna Greciia by Spartan settlers c. 1150 – 950 BCE States of the Peloponnese are invaded by Dorian Greeks
