Peru. Location. South America. Location (continued…). Peru is located in South America. It is bordered by Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia, and Chile. Because of the Andes, Peru is extremely mountainous. It also has many beautiful rivers and forests. Part of Peru is by the coast.

  3. Location (continued…) • Peru is located in South America. • It is bordered by Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia, and Chile. • Because of the Andes, Peru is extremely mountainous. • It also has many beautiful rivers and forests. • Part of Peru is by the coast.

Society and Culture • Peru’s official languages are Spanish and Quechua, the language of the Incas. • Peru is about the size of Alaska. • For a living, most people teach, farm, or are in financing or sales. • Average homes are basic, made from raw materials, some provided by the Amazon jungle. • The population is approximately 29 million. • Nuevo Sol is the currency. The Nuevo Sol is .323468 compared to the US dollar.

History (continued…) • Prehistoric cities started appearing in Peru around 4000 B.C. • Up until about 1100 A.D. not much was known about the Peruvian people because they had no written language. • The Incan Empire lasted from the 12th to early 15th century. • In 1533, Francisco Pizarro and his Spanish conquistadors had officially gained control. • On July 28, 1821 Peru became independent from Spain. • In 1990, Alberto Fujimori was elected president.

  9. Zampoña • It is also called the Siku in Peru • The different types are Chuli, Anatara, Malta, Sanka, Semi Toyos, Tabla Siku, and the Child’s Siku. • Most often, this instrument is made from reeds. • One unique thing about the zampoña is that it’s played between two people.

  12. Quena Flutes • The quena is a traditional Incan flute. • Ollantay, an Incan princess, was forbidden to marry her lover because he was a commoner, so she died of a broken heart. When he visited her grave, he heard a whistling sound that inspired him to make the flute. • Most often it is made of bone and wood. • The Incas used it to call spirits.

  15. Charango • The charango is a small Andean guitar traditionally made from the body of an armadillo. • They vary in size and can have anywhere from four to fifteen strings. • The most common has ten strings. • The charango is usually performed alongside guitars, flutes and singing.

  18. Bombo • The bombo is found in the Andean region. • It is played with a stick and a mallet. • The bombo is made of a hollow tree. • This wonderful instrument is made of animal skin. • It has a very deep and mellow tone.

  20. Religion/Government • Almost everyone in Peru is a Roman Catholic. • Music is used in religious celebrations. • People wear bright, traditional clothes made from alpaca wool. • It is a constitutional republic.
