A few of the studies you've been reading in recent weeks provide the evidencebase for this phenomenon; yet, the real task for any sociologist (in my view) is to develop and/or apply existing theory to explain empirical relationships. In sociological research, this approach to theory is often termed 'the search for social mechanisms' (see Hedstrom and Swedberg's essay on social mechanisms if interested in this social scientific approach). Although you are likely to find all sorts of fancy and dressedup definitions for theory in sociology textbooks, I'd like each of you to use my simple definition: in sociology, theories are explanations of social phenomenon
