How does the U.S. feel about war? • “Let no man or woman thoughtlessly or falsely talk of America sending its armies to European fields…This nation will remain a neutral nation, but I cannot ask that every American remain neutral in thought as well. Even a neutral has a right to take account of facts. Even a neutral cannot be asked to close his mind or his conscience…I have said not once, but many times, that I have seen war and I hate war…As long as it is in my power to prevent, there will be no blackout of peace in the United States” – FDR 1939

  3. What is America doing in 1939? • Neutrality Acts – 1930’s. • Cash and Carry – Replaced Neutrality Acts! Helped allied forces! • Sale of war material to other nations as long as they pay cash and carry it home in their own ships.

  4. Europe worsens • Axis powers gaining momentum! • France has fallen (1940) • Britain under siege by Germany • Tripartite Pact signed • Defense treaty • Japan, Germany and Italy all signed • Each Axis nation would defended another Axis nation in case of an attack. • What does this mean for everyone?

America The Arsenal of Democracy • Roosevelt said: “If Britain falls, the Axis powers will be left unchallenged to conquer the world” • Lend-Lease Plan • Sell and lend/lease of materials to Britain w/out isolationist getting angry • Materials sold to Britain were “vital to U.S. defense” • U.S. supports this – but does not support war

  6. Germany tries to halt lend-lease • U-boats!! Again… • Several U.S. ships were attacked (but still only 20% of Americans wanted to go to war) • FDR says vessels can shoot German ships on sight

  7. Japan and U.S. • Japan was rapidly expanding and taking over as much land as possible. • Called it the “Greater East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere” – basically they planned to suck the resources out of China • U.S. cuts off supplies to Japan!

Pearl Harbor • Attack begins at 7:53 p.m., lasts 2 hours • When it was all over: • 350 airplanes had been attacked • 18 battleships were sunk • 188 airplanes were blown up • 2335 Americans were killed • 64 Japanese fighters died. • U.S.S. Arizona was the first ship to be sunk, 1,000 of the casualties were from that ship alone

Roosevelt to his wife… • “I never wanted to have to fight this war on two fronts, we haven’t the Navy to fight in both the Atlantic and the Pacific…so we will have to build up the Navy and the Air Force and that will mean that we will have to take a good many defeats before we can have a victory”.
