  1. What is Configuration Management? • The management of a software development process as it evolves into a software product or system • The means of communicating to the project's designers and developers the technical detail and events that lead to the eventual build and delivery of the final product

  2. Configuration Management Configuration Management Configuration Identification Change Management Configuration Status Accounting Define the product and its configuration documentation identification Control changes to a product and its configuration documentation Provide status and information about a product and its configuration documentation Configuration Audits Verify consistency of configuration documentation against the product

  3. History Of CM Configuration management (CM) was imposed on defense contractors in the 1960's as a way to define products and to process changes whereby those products could be properly maintained. CM forced contractors to consider total life cycle costs, not just development and production costs.Today, after 40 years of advancements in information technology, the basic premise of CM has not changed. CM itself, however, has not kept pace. It remains an underdeveloped discipline.

  4. History Of CM CM, if properly in place, is ingrained in the fabric of the business. Trying to implement CM without proper preparation is to start a series of turf wars. That is only one obstacle.CM is a language within itself. It is difficult to discuss CM with those who do not "speak the language." Furthermore, different activities have their own dialect. Different activities may use different combinations of the terms shown below. Some do CM and never call it CM.
