  3. Software • ArcGIS 10 desktop (ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcScene, ArcGlobe, and ArcToolbox) • Available on all the computers in Star Lab • For free education edition, ask Dylan Parenti, EH 1709, d@geog.ucsb.edu. (Some modules are not available in this education edition)

  4. Lab 1: Introduction to ArcGIS

  5. Objective • To familiarize with the modules of ArcGIS 10 desktop

  6. ArcGIS software suite • ArcGIS desktop (ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcScene, ArcGlobe, and ArcToolbox) • Tools for GIS users to manage geographic data, make spatial analysis, and produce maps. • ArcGIS Engine • Components for GIS developers to make customized desktop applications. • ArcGIS Server • Tools for GIS professionals to publish geospatial data on the Internet. Components for GIS developers to make web-based applications. • We only use ArcGIS desktop in this class

  7. ArcGIS desktop-- ArcCatalog • organizing, browsing, and managing geographic data.

  8. ArcGIS desktop-- ArcToolbox • A set of tools for data processing, analysis, and conversion. • Can be started in most ArcGIS desktop applications.

  9. ArcGIS desktop-- ArcMap • Creating, viewing, querying, editing, composing, and publishing maps.

  10. Notes • Query Data in ArcMap

  11. Notes • Map Requirements • Including all map elements (title, North Arrow, legend, scale bar) • Following the basic principles of cartography (See the principles on the instruction material).

  12. Notes • Read the instruction material carefully before doing the lab. • Do NOT use space in the file or folder names • Use “yingjiehu” instead of “yingjie hu”. If you really want to separate the words in your folder name, you can use “yingjie_hu”.

  13. To Hand in through • Gauchospace • The question sheet, with typed answers • One map of your favorite state • One Corrected SB county map • Due dates: • Jan 25th (Next Wednesday) 11:30am
