Vocabulary, Week 11 Do Now: Copy down the definitions on your notecards. • Morbid (adj.) pg. 275- describing an unhealthy mental state or attitude, usually gloomy or related to death • Unison (adj.) pg. 278 – describing something done at the same time • Menial (adj.) pg. 308 – describing something that does not require much skill • PEL/PULS: “to push, to drive” • Compel (v.) – to force or strongly persuade • Impulse (n.) – a sudden urge to do something • Expel (v.) – to send out or away

  12. Your Turn! At your tables, choose three of the indefinite pronouns. Write 2 sentences for each, using it in its singular form and plural form. Ex: AnyAny of the jewelry is yours for the taking. Any of my cousins are right for the part. (“Any” refers to “jewelry” in the first sentence and “cousins” in the second)

When a sentence includes non-essential information, we have to identify the subject and make sure the verb still agrees. • Example) Everyone, including those who did not attend the previous community service trip, is invited to this Saturday’s trip to the animal shelter. • Subject? Does the verb agree?

Any considerate young person, as well as those who are just plain polite, moves to the back of the bus for the elderly. 2. All of the animals, many of which lived their entire lives in the zoo, were let loose by accident last Friday. 3. Everybody, even those who do not have much, have the ability to offer something valuable.

The Taliban • The Taliban (“Students of Islamic Knowledge Movement”) ruled Afghanistan from 1996 until 2001. • The Taliban are one of the mujahideen(“holy warriors” or “freedom fighters”) groups that formed against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan (1979-1989) • When the Taliban came into power, many Afghans were relieved to see the brutal Soviets replaced by devout religious figures; The Afghan people believed the Taliban would restore peace. • However, the Taliban enforced strict Sharia, or Islamic law. Public executions and punishments became regular events at Afghan soccer stadiums. • Frivolous activities, such as kite-flying, were banned. • Television, music, and the Internet were banned to root out “non-Islamic” influence.

  29. Men were required to wear beards, and subjected to beatings if they didn’t. • Women and girls were forbidden to attend school. Women were forbidden to work outside the home, which caused a crisis in healthcare and education. • Women were prohibited from leaving their home without a male relative – those that did so risked being beaten or killed by Taliban offices of The Ministry for the Protection of Virtue and Prevention of Vice. • A woman caught wearing fingernail polish may have had her fingers cut off. • Women were forced to wear the burqa to “protect” their honor.
