  3. Bell’s Palsy A syndrome that attack facial nerve (N.VII) facial muscle paralyzed unilateral General characteristic of Bell’s Palsy is difficult in moving facial muscle at affected side, such as: Can’t close the eye Taste loss

  4. Epidemiology 20 of 100.000 per population AS: 40.000 people each year Increase by age 4-14% is hereditery Pregnant Woman = 3x more susceptible than unpregnant 4x more susceptible in diabetes mellitus people

  5. Pathology • Research: Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) found in geniculate ganglion. • PCR Test (Polymerase-Chain Reaction Test) inendoneural facial nerve (N.VII) fluid foundHerpes Simplex Virus (HSV) type 1

  6. Symptom • Difficult to eat and drink • Facial swelling • Drooling often • Depression of the eyebrow • Depression of eyelid • Unsymmetrical face • Eyelid can’t close completely • Taste loss • Facial unilateral paralyzed • Difficult to speak

  7. Related symptoms & clinical signs : 1. Lesion of inflammation outside the foramen stylomastoideus

  8. 2. Lesion of inflammation in canalis facialis (including the chorda tympani)

  9. 3. Lesion of inflammation in canalis facialis (including musculus stapedius) 4. Lesion of inflammation in geniculate ganglion

  10. 5. Lesion of inflammation in meatus acusticus interna area 6. Lesion of inflammation in facial nerve (N.VII) wayout from pons

  11. Taste Sense that captures chemical stimulus Anatomy and Physiology of taste Structure Taste buds or gustation organ is situated at the surface of tongue inside the papillae. Consists of the receptor cell (gustatory cell) Surrounded by epithel supporting-cell, The free end has the microvilli, known as taste hair that Continued through the opening inside the taste bud that are called the taste pore.

  12. Capable of feeling the five main tastes: sweet, sour, bitter, salty & savory (umami)

  13. TONGUE INNERVATION Sensoric: Two third area of the anterior by facialis nerve (VII) One third posterior that reach the brain stem by Glossopharyngeal nerve (IX)

  14. TASTE PATHWAY

  16. CONCLUSION Bell’s Palsy syndrome which is caused by Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) can lead to a taste loss condition because it attacks facialis nerve in two third anterior part of tongue
