Magnetometer

Magnetometer

ROMAP & RPC fluxgate sensors:

  • Both are vector compensated ringcore sensors

  • RPC: Coils on ceramics, feedback and sense using the same coil system

  • ROMAP: Cu wire covered by bond coat, feedback separated from sense coils

  • ROMAP sensor two times larger in diameter

ROMAP Mag electronics:

  • Digital fluxgate electronics (sensor ac signal digitised by 40kHz, pre-processing in FPGA)

ROMAP Mag parameters:

  • Range 2000nT

  • Resolution 0.005nT

Fluxgate Sensor

  • Ringcore Technology

    • Developed since 1983 by several German institutes and companies

    • Noise < 10pT/Sqrt(Hz)

    • Offset stability < 2nT/year

  • Vector compensating Helmholtz System

    • No transverse field dependency

    • Orientation of magnetic axis depends on feedback coil system only

    • No support material like ceramics: low weight & temp. dependence of scale value depends on one material

Digital Fluxgate Electronics

  • Heritage / Reliability

    • Developed in Germany since 1991

    • Tested worldwide in observatories (high precision) and applied physics (robustness)

    • First space application onboard the MIR, actually prepared for ESA’s Rosetta and Venus Express missions

  • Advantages

    • Digitization close to sensor very limited number of analogue components

    • Very large dynamic range 10pT resolution also close to Earth no range switching anymore

Test & Calibration

  • Preflight

    • All magnetometers will be tested under various environmental conditions (B,)

    • Large number of facilities exist in Europe (Magnetsrode, Niemegk, Graz…)

    • Additionally a test facility (similar to that in Graz) will be installed in Berkeley

  • Inflight

    • preprocessing and calibration software for Cluster and Equator-S was developed in Braunschweig and Graz

    • Personal (E.Georgescu, K.H.Fornacon) is available after Cluster
