From the beginning: • Born: June 6, 1901 • Originally named: Kusnasosro (name was changed after a series of illnesses) • Was a Demagogue • was known as Bung Karno and merdeka • He was a left wing leader • Spent long periods of his childhood with his grandparents in the village of Tulungagung • He became a devotee of wayang based on the Hindu epics • Mastered the languages: Javanese, Sudanese and Balinese. He also mastered major languages such as German, French, English and, later on, Japanese.

Rise to power: • 1927- obtained a degree in civil engineering. • 1929 to 1931- Sukarno spent these years in a Dutch prison located in Bandung • 1933 to 1942- spent in exile on Flores and Sumatra • March 1942- Japanese invade and Sukarno welcomes them as personal and national liberators. • During WWII, he was used by the Japanese as a chief advisor and propagandist. • June 1st, 1945- pressured Japan to give Indonesia independence, giving his famous speech.

  4. Ideology:Pantjasila (Five Principles): • Nationalism • Internationalism • Democracy • Social prosperity • Belief in God • Claimed that it was still sacrosanct state doctrine.

Independence of Indonesia: • Collapse of Japan now apparent, Sukarno wavered. • Activist youth- kidnapped, intimidated and persuaded Sukarno for the independence which was given August 17, 1945. • He becomes the first President of the New Republic. • Defiant of the Dutch, which transferred sovereignty on December 27 1949. • Graduated from a Technical College in 1927, he, along with members of the General Study Club (Algemene Studieclub) created the Indonesian Nationalist Union the following year. • Known after May 1928 as the Indonesian Nationalist Party (PNI) • the party stressed mass organization, noncooperation with the colonial authorities, and the ultimate goal of independence

  6. He created his own version of Marxism to obtain a huge mass to follow him. Important theme: Marhaenism Marhaen Title was given to a man he claimed to have met while cycling through the country side near Bandung.(1930) Totalitarian? Minorities?
