Thanks to Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and Construction Industry Council (CIC) for collaborating to organise this workshop.

  4. Tackling transition in CBE • Context • Making the transition into university education can be challenging for students. Evidence from good practice across the United Kingdom suggests that collaboration between pre-tertiary and academic departments can be of benefit to students, and also has advantages for teachers in both sectors. • CBE has been described as a complex and fragmented sector, but it offers a wide variety of challenging and exciting careers

  5. Tackling transition in CBE • Objectives • This networking event is designed to facilitate collaboration between universities, teachers, tutors and careers advisors and industry representatives. • The focus is to explore ways in which we can help students to choose the right course for them in the Construction Built Environment subject areas, and what the best ways are to make the transition into university as smooth and successful as possible.

  6. Activity: World Cafe • Thank you to our 4 CBE ambassadors • Shaun Jones Assistant Site Manager, BAM Construct • Tony Doherty Bricklayer, Golden Gates Housing Trust • Ben Thomas Graduate Scheme, Morgan Sindall • Christopher Gilkinson, Graduate Scheme, Morgan Sindall • Dan Williams Trainee Civil Engineer, Capita • The ambassadors will spend time on each table sharing their compelling and inspiring career-track stories. Delegates can share this information with colleagues, young people, students or adults considering construction as a career

  7. Activity: challenges and enablers • In your groups please discuss the 4 points on the handoutin relation to your respective organisations/institutions. • How can we work together to overcome the challenges these points present? • In your groups please start to formulate 3 key action points you can work on after this event together to try and address the challenges you have identified • In what ways can we ease transition into undergraduate CBE courses and how can we ensure these courses are both attractive and valued?

  8. Activity: challenges and enablers • Having selected 3 challenges for your group to develop solutions for • Identify any possible partners you might be able to collaborate with in the future. • For each challenge explain your intended action • What, who, when, how? • Write them on the template • Choose someone to feed back your pledges
