Central Level Administration: MIUR – Ministry of Education, University and Research • The MIUR has the following tasks: • guidance, planning, monitoring • It is responsible for: • general organisation of school education; • provision of an essential level of vocational education and training; • legal status of teaching staff; • determination of financial resources to the schools; • evaluation of the school system.

  4. Local Administration REGIONAL SCHOOL OFFICES carry out administration management through the ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICE CENTRES (CSA)

  5. School Level Administration SCHOOL AUTONOMY (Law 59/97 Decree 275/99) teaching autonomy SCHOOLS are granted organisation autonomy research, experimentation and development autonomy Each school develops its own ‘Plan of Educational Offer’ (POF)

  6. ‘PLAN OF EDUCATIONAL OFFER’ (POF) “… fundamental document on the cultural and planning identity of the schools…” The POF, developed by the Teachers’ Assembly, provides the educational objectives of the school and its compulsory curriculum made up of a part established at national level and a part established by the school.

  8. FIRST SCHOOL CYCLE PRIMARY SCHOOL: 5 years + LOWER SECONDARY SCHOOL: 3 years State exam at the end of the first school cycle

  9. PRIMARY SCHOOL National guidelines for personalised study plans, have replaced the old programs since 2004/2005 SUBJECTS: • Italian • English • Mathematics • Sciences • History • Geography • ICT • Music • Arts • Motory and sports sciences • Catholic religion + Civil coexistence education

  10. LOWER SECONDARY SCHOOL The National guidelines for personalised study plans foresee the following SUBJECTS: • Second foreign language • Arts • Music • Motory and sports sciences • Religion • Italian • History • Geography • Mathematics • Sciences and technology • English

ORGANISATION OF SCHOOL TIME PRIMARY SCHOOL • Total amount of teaching hours in a school year: 891compulsory hours + 99optional hours • Single institutes are granted autonomy to organise their timetables LOWER SECONDARY SCHOOL • Total amount of teaching hours in a school year: 891 compulsory hours + 198 optional hours • Each subject has a minimum and a maximum amount of teaching time

  12. SECOND SCHOOL CYCLE LICEO CLASSICO/LICEO SCIENTIFICO/LINGUISTICO/SOCIO-PEDAGOGICO 5 YEARS 4 YEARS + 1 additional year LICEO ARTISTICO ISTITUTO D’ARTE 3 YEARS + 2 YEARS ISTITUTI TECNICI 5 YEARS ISTITUTI PROFESSIONALI 3 YEARS + 2 YEARS

INITIAL TEACHER TRAINING Up to school year 2006/2007: • PREPRIMARY AND PRIMARY EDUCATION: primary education sciences degree (4 years) • LOWER AND UPPER SECONDARY EDUCATION: degree (5 years) + Specialisation School - SSIS (2 years) From school year 2006/2007 (Decree no.227/2005): • For all levels of education: degree (3 + 2 years of specialisation for teaching)
