  1. ASSOCIAZIONE NESTORE HOW WE WERE & HOW WE ARE YESTERDAY & TODAY

  2. ….retiring is like “crossing a ford” or “building a bridge”…… …better get ready!

  3. THE BRIDGE AS A METAPHOR OF TRANSITION TO RETIREMENT

  4. THE TOPICS • The1960’s:preparation for retirement in Europe • 1995: an important year • What happened in Italy • Towards the Nestore Project • Why Nestore • From the Project to the Association • The first activities • Nestore today • Nestore tomorrow

  5. THE BEGINNINGS

  6. 1960’s: Preparation for retirement in Europe In many European countries (Holland, Germany, France, Belgium) discussions began since the ’60s with great foresightedness, regarding the problem of how to manage the turnover of the workforce, how to manage the transfer between young and older workers, and how to accompany the latter during their exit from the workplace

  7. In Europe studies are made and experience acquired concerning the transition period from work to retirement and the need for specific preparation in this regard. • Study and training centres are set up with specialization in the subject • One of the cardinal points of the training projects is the need to organize residential courses and involve partners (wives, husbands, companions …)

  8. What made all this possible? The involvement during discussions of the State, Industry and Trade-unions, who fully agreed to finance and organize common projects on the subject of retirement

  9. 1995: an important year • SOCRATES: under the auspices of the European Union a programme was set up to promote and finance pilot courses of Permanent Education for Adults. • Under this programme Norway, Great Britain, Holland and Spain worked together on a European project of training for trainers involved in the preparation for retirement and subsequently Germany and Italy joined the group

  10. WHAT HAPPENED IN ITALY?

  11. The first experiments were made through company initiative, subsequent to the new theories inspired by “company social responsibility”. • from 1979 to 1986 Fiat in Turin organized meetings for the preparation towards retirement for its own employees organized by the Maderna Centre • from 1984 to1985 the A.E.M. (Electric Company) in Milan organized some preparatory courses for retirees

  12. Other interesting training experiments were set up by the university world, in study centres and regional institutions: • 1996: the Project “ Life beyond work, age well” organized by the Social Service for Business (I.S.S.I.M.) in Milan . • 1997: a Project organized by the Regional Institute of Social Research of Trento

  13. The reasons for the time lag • In the business world training, flexibility and mobility are considered solely in regard to productivity and performance • Trade-unions are not able to place the problem among their priorities • The State is absent

  14. TOWARDS THE NESTORE PROJECT

  15. … Everything began at the beginning of the 1990s The studies and experience of Duccio Demetrio with some of his associates (Dante Bellamio, Licia Riva, Sergio Tramma) on the subject of adult education and the preparation for retirement permitted the convergence of all prior experience towards the constitution of the Nestore Project

  16. The contribution of expert voluntary work • An important role was played by AISTP • (Italian Association for the development and • transfer of professional skills) which through the • contribution of “expert voluntary work” set up • socially-useful ventures and gave fundamental • impulse for the development of the Socrates • Project in Italy • The preparation towards retirement and expert • voluntary work remain the two pillars on which the • Nestore Project is based

  17. The role of the Società Umanitaria • Particular emphasis must be given to the role of the Società Umanitaria, as a catalyst element for the project, right from the beginning and for giving hospitality to Nestore at its headquarters in Via Daverio, Milan. • Having its offices at the Umanitaria has always been an asset of great value for the Association. • The President of the Umanitaria, under tacit agreement, has always been President of Nestore

  18. WHY “NESTORE”? Nestore is the old and wise King of Pilo, celebrated in Omero’s Illiade, of extra-ordinary longevity and wisdom, who played a very important role in the Troian war. The name was chosen following Dante Bellamio’s suggestion

  19. The organizations involved in the Nestore project CIDA Lombardia e Piemonte SOCIETA’ UMANITARIA AISTP CENTRO MADERNA ANLA AISL AISO ADA AUSER

  20. The founding team • Dante Bellamio • Fabrizio Ferrari • Enzo Garbuglio • Fausto Melloni • Ricardo Moragas • Corrado Morozzo della Rocca • Amos Nannini • Gianni Pucci • Licia Riva • Sergio Tramma

  21. What were the initial objectives of the project? • Making individual retirees, public and private organizations aware of the importance and benefits of preparing for retirement • Organizing pilot events and training programmes with the intent of reducing the personal and social risk and exploit the heritage created by retirees and retired individuals

  22. The first step to launch the project: a Congress On 23rd November 1996 a congress was held at the Società Umanitaria: “The Transition from work to retirement. Directions and life strategies, social action and training promotion”.

  23. From a Project to an Association

  24. 25th FEBRUARY 1998THE ASSOCIATION IS CONSTITUTED IN NOVEMBER OF THE SAME YEAR THE FIRST ASSEMBLY IS HELD

  25. The statutory prerogatives • Nestore is established as a second level non-profit organization: that is with group as well as individual members • It is non-political, non-confessional, non-profit making and carries out the work of making individuals, public and private organizations aware of the importance and advantage to prepare for retirement

  26. … from Article 2 of the Statute • To promote pilot training programmes aimed at reducing the risk of personal and social discomfort of those people reaching retirement • To empower and exploit the heritage of experience of people reaching retirement • To support and certify the activities of trainers in the field of transition to retirement

  27. 1999 – The first board meeting • During the month of February the President of Società Umanitaria, Massimo Dalla Campa, is formally acknowledged as President while Fiorella Nahum is nominated Vice-President.   • Work begins on the consolidation of the new Association, extension and diversification of its activities which will be developed gradually in the following years.

  28. First activities in 1998 • Translation of the essay “La jubilacion, un enfoque positivo” by Ricardo Moragas • FFN (Training of Nestore Trainers) Course, in Milan and Turin • PPN (Nestore’s Preparation for Retirement) Course, in Milan and Turin

  29. The essay In 1998 the essay of Ricardo Moragas “La jubilacion, un enfoque positivo” was translated for the “Quaderni AISL” periodical booklets The monographic booklet contains the preliminaries and characteristics of the transition process towards retirement, resulting from the experience acquired in Europe The text terminates with a brief summary of the Nestore Project prepared by Silvia Tognetti 29

  31. PPN (Nestore Preparation for Retirement) Course • The first edition was held in Milan in 1998 for retirees and retired people, who were involved through Umanitaria and by word of mouth • A second edition was organized the same year by Maderna Centre for UGAF (Fiat Senior Group) in Turin • In 2000 and 2001 the Milan Municipality entrusted Nestore with a research aimed at surveying problems, expectations and needs of its employees and with the preparation and execution of two courses on transition to retirement for the same population • The organization was planned by the Association together with the Equal Opportunities Committee of the Milan Municipality

  32. NESTORE TODAY

  33. THE ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES ARE ORGANIZED, ON A VOLUNTARY BASIS, BY A SMALL GROUP OF ACTIVE MEMBERS, ALMOST ALL OF WHOM ARE ON THE BOARD 33

  34. The Association governing bodies: • Assembly • Board • President • Vice-president • Treasurer • Executive Committee 34

  35. The Scientific Committee • In 2003 the Association nominated a Scientific Committee with consulting and strategic orientation tasks for choices regarding culture, image and financing of the Association activities. • Members of the Committee are university professors and scholars from the most important universities in Lombardy 35

  36. Membership development • Nestore todate has 164 members of two types: group and individual. • All members can be either sustaining or ordinary members. • Sustaining members: AISO, ALDAI and Società Umanitaria. • Ordinary group members: AISTP, AUSER and ANDROMEDIA

  38. The Association’ choices • Over the years the Association has chosen to maintain and reconcile a dual spirit: a) that of a ”centre for cultural development on the subjects of retirement and accompaniment to voluntary activity” (training, research, publications and meetings) and b) a“centre for social aggregation on an individual level”, aimed at organizing and promoting activities for members and non-members. The Association in this regard acts as a meeting point and a magnet for social aggregation for its members and supporters (meetings and round tables, exhibitions, magazine “Nestore Informa”, Christmas party, etc.) • The activities organized over the years reflect this dual spirit. 38

  39. The projects accomplished over the years • TRAINING • RESEARCH • CONFERENCES • PUBLICATIONS • MEETINGS • NEWSLETTER “NESTORE INFORMA” • GROUP MEMBER ACTIVITIES • THE WEB-SITE

  40. Training Training represents the heart of Nestore’s propositions for its own members and non-members, transmits tangible proposals on how to face the transition towards retirement Nestore Preparation for Retirement Preparation and Orientation Course for Voluntary Activities Autobiographic Narration Laboratory Advanced Project on Transition from Work to Retirement Short courses

  41. Research It represents the commitment of the Association towards in depth study and discussion on the themes regarding active ageing, transition from work to retirement and orientation to voluntary work; It represents Nestore’s effort for constant revision and innovation with the aim to give even greater justification of its own social role. Two projects have been organized todate, both presented at Conferences held in 2006 and 2008.

  42. Conferences 2004-2006: Biennial research “Transition from work toretirement: experiences and projects”, sponsored by the Cariplo Foundation and the Lombardy Region and carried out with the scientific supervision of the State University Milan and Bicocca University Milan. ▪ Conference at the Società Umanitaria, Salone degli Affreschi, 18th October 2006. ▪ Book published by F. Angeli in 2006 2008: Research “Nestore’s Ten Years: results and testimonials of its members”, carried out on 400 members, ex-members and participants in courses from 1998 to 2008 ▪ Conference “Retirement: a problem or a resource?” at the Società Umanitaria, Salone degli Affreschi, 11th December 2008; ▪ Publication of a Final Report and Conference Papers

  43. Publications • They represent: • a testimonial of the work carried out by Nestore, the spirit and desire to make plans for retirement • a means through which the Association image can be disseminated

  45. Meetings and round tables Informal meetings among members and non-members began as an answer to the need of offering a cultural stimulus as a moment of social gathering. In 2004 the Nestore meetings became a monthly event. They are free of charge and open to all members and to all those who wish to update their information and knowledge on the subjects related to the Association activities: a moment for meeting friends and participating in a free discussion at the end of each meeting.

  46. 2004 - 2005 A Series “What will I do when I grow up”: moments for meeting and discussion between those interested in voluntary work and voluntary organizations (three associations are invited each time in a monographic form) that are engaged in diverse social issues (disability, protection of rights, elderly, women, children, etc.) Significant meetings • 2000: Presentation of G. Vitrotti’s book “A future of life”, F. Angeli Publishing House

  47. Thursday’s Book (since 2006) Considering the fact that reading is the ideal mental stimulus to exercise and keep one’s brain young, Nestore wants to give the opportunity of participating in systematic monthly presentations of books with the author and a critic or a discussant on up to date topics of special interest. During the meeting some time is regurarly dedicated to discussion and questions for the author or the critic on the panel. Held on Thursday afternoons in collaboration with the Società Umanitaria.

  48. Newsletter “Nestore Informa” • The first number was published in March 2001 and todate there have been 19 six-monthly issues • The objective of “Nestore Informa” is that of: - Opening a channel for communication and exchange of views within its members, contributing to create a network - Collecting testimonials and contributions regarding the themes relating to the Associations’ institutional objectives - Supplying information from external sources regarding subjects such as voluntary work, retirement, active ageing, etc.

  50. Social activities for members Individual members have often felt the need to be more actively involved in the Association activities. Nestore has often organized special events just for its members since they reflect one of Nestore’s vocations and the desire to maintain direct contact within the whole association, favouring mutual understanding and creating beneficial cooperation.
