    • Interesting facts? Event? Most important things? General overview?

  • Worth 50 points

  • Not expecting perfection!

  • Get your “feet wet” on our “stage”

  • Point out areas you need to focus on for future speeches

  • DO NOT WRITE OUT THE ENTIRE SPEECH!

  • Speech materials: handout/outline (most be typed), notecards (keywords only), object, and critique sheets

  • Looking for:

    • Extemporaneous delivery

    • Attempts strong delivery (e.g. good eye contact)

    • Attention getter, state purpose, memorable close

    • 2 to 3 main points

    • General purpose, specific purpose, central idea

    • Appropriate topic and object

  • Absent = zero on speech

  • Critique sheets count as speech workshop

  • Late/miss slot = -5 off grade

  • Time penalties for speech 1

    • Under/over 1 minute = -5 (-5 for each additional minute)

    • Under/over 59 to 30 seconds = -2

    • Under/over 29 to 16 seconds = -1

    • 15 second grace period

  • Practice

  • Aim for middle range of time frame

  • Attire = appropriate; not “too casual”

  • Do not start with “Hi my name is….”; start with your attention getter

  • Practice

  • Make sure your object is visible

  • Arrive to class on time

  • PRACTICE (with your notecards and object; time yourself)
