The Sleep of Indifference • Where as in most parts of the United States, the War of 1812 spurred business and brought new ideas, this was not the case in North Carolina, who had done very little to promote education, science or promote industry. • Since it seemed North Carolina was “asleep” and letting progress and change pass it by, it became known as the “Rip Van Winkle state”.
The Sleep of Indifference • Indifference: • Meaning: Lack of concern, disinterest….just don’t care • Why is this chapter titled the Sleep of Indifference?
Impact of Isolation • People lived far apart on scattered farms • Few Towns/Little Trade • Interior of stated lacked roads and means of communication

Education in NC • Education was not important • Children were a labor source • Children would work on farms
Education in NC • Wealthy land owners were ok with no education because it would save them money • Wealthy felt that they should not pay taxes to help the poor
Economy in NC • A state’s economy is the way people produce goods and services • NC’s economy prospered and faltered because of the cotton gin

Farm Conditions in NC • Farmers made no effort to improve land fertility • No crop rotation • “Move, improve, or starve” were the choices for farmers
