Warm Up • Nickname: a familiar or humorous name given to a person or thing instead of or as well as the real name • What are your nicknames if you have one or two? • Why do you have that nickname? • Can you think of nicknames that NC may have? • If you can, why do you think our state has those nicknames? • Set warm up aside and have homework out for checking!

Homework Check • Title: North Carolina after the War of 1812 • How does the impact of isolation contribute to people’s feelings of individualism in NC? • List 2 examples that led to a weak economy in NC • What was NC’s attitude towards education in the early 1800’s? • Describe 2 farm conditions in NC after the War of 1812

The Sleep of Indifference • Where as in most parts of the United States, the War of 1812 spurred business and brought new ideas, this was not the case in North Carolina, who had done very little to promote education, science or promote industry. •  Since it seemed North Carolina was “asleep” and letting progress and change pass it by, it became known as the “Rip Van Winkle state”.

  8. Impact of Isolation • People lived far apart on scattered farms • Few Towns/Little Trade • Interior of stated lacked roads and means of communication

  10. Education in NC • Education was not important • Children were a labor source • Children would work on farms

  11. Education in NC • Wealthy land owners were ok with no education because it would save them money • Wealthy felt that they should not pay taxes to help the poor

  12. Economy in NC • A state’s economy is the way people produce goods and services • NC’s economy prospered and faltered because of the cotton gin

  13. Economy in NC • North Carolina became largely an agricultural state with manufacturing suffering • One crop state: Cotton • Food crops neglected

  14. Economy in NC • Little industry • Limited Trade • Poor Banking

  15. Farm Conditions in NC • Farmers made no effort to improve land fertility • No crop rotation • “Move, improve, or starve” were the choices for farmers

  16. Farm Conditions in NC • Lack of transportation and communication (isolation) • Few Rivers • Poor Roads • Few Bridges • Frequent Flooding of Roads • Farmers would have to spend half their crop to get it to market
