  2. Geography • Portugal is on the coast of Spain and they are connected like one country. • Parts are mountainous • small farms and vineyards • Rainy

  3. Virginia Beach Geography • On the Beach • Hot summers, cold winters • Flat ground

  4. Government • Prime Minister is head of government • Dominated by Socialist Liberal Powers

  5. American Government • Run by a President • Most commonly Democratic or Republican • Divided in 3 parts Executive, Legislative, and Judicial

  6. Schooling • EsolaSecundarioCamiloCasteloBranco • They are called primary and secondary schools

  7. American Schooling • Pre-school • Elementary • Middle School • High School • College (optional)

  8. Similarities in School • Same types of classes • - Biology • -Philosophy • -English • -Spanish • We take English as are first language, they take Portuguese.

  9. Family • Most families have and only child • Distant families like grandparents, aunts, and uncles are a large part of children’s lives

  10. American Families • Most have a few kids, 2 or 3 • Bigger families are very common

  11. Customs/Traditions • Portuguese celebrate Carnival -parades and Samba dancing. -People dressed in costumes

  12. Comparing to America • We do not celebrate Carnival • We have holidays they do not • Thanksgiving • Memorial/Veteran’s Day • 4th of July

  13. Current Events in Potugal • Prime Minister resigned • Trying to get out of European Union

  14. Current Events in America • Possible shut-down of Federal Government goes up for debate • Players in NFL return to Mediation.

  15. Comparing countries • Europeans have a main downtown area in the middle of the city • We have similar music, Coldplay and Pink Floyd are popular • We take similar classes in school
