  2. What is Skin? • Largest organ of the body • Has 3 layers (Epidermis, Dermis, Hypodermis or Subcutaneous Layer) • Protects our bodies • Controls our temps • Allows feeling of touch • Without it we can’t live

  3. Which One is Which? UVA UVB More intense Sunburn or reddening Superficial Time of Day (10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Previously thought to be the cause of skin cancer • Less intense • Tanning • Deeper penetration • Is as dangerous or more dangerous • Use sunscreen that also has UVA protectant

  4. Too Much Sun What’s it Mean? • Can cause….. • Sun burn • 1st degree- typical sunburn, red, painful • 2nd degree- blisters, peeling • Cataracts • Sun stroke • Weakened immune system • Skin cancer • Basal cell carcinoma • Squamous cell carcinoma • Malignant Melanoma

Skin Types • White, very fair skin, red or blonde hair- always burns, never tans • White, fair skin, red or blonde hair- usually burns, tans w/ difficulty • Most of us (any hair/eye color)- sometimes mild burn tans gradually • Mediterranean- rarely burns, tans with ease • Middle-Eastern- very rarely burns, tans easily • African American- Never burns, tans very easily

Prevention • Avoid dangerous times • Avoid situations with strong reflection • Avoid tanning and tanning booths • If you must… • Wear protective clothing • Use a broad spectrum sunscreen • higher SPF and apply 30 minutes prior to exposure • Do regular checks of your body • Seek medical attention for anything out of the ordinary

  8. Skin Self-Exam • Follow ABCDE • Asymmetry • Border • Color • Diameter • Evolving • Focus on areas of exposure • Do about once a month • Examine in zones • Ask a friend or family member to assist

Did You Know? • A tan is your bodies attempt at avoiding sun damage • Causes damage to your DNA • Darker skin is an adaptation • 80% of sun exposure before age 25 • Australia accounts for the highest rate of skin cancer • UV is the main cause of skin cancers • Skin cancers affect 1 million people a year • Melanoma kills 8,000 Americans a year

  12. So What Does All of This Mean? • Some sun is good • Too much is bad • Moderation….. • 10-15 minutes a day • Darker skin you need more • Supplements • Cod liver oil • Vitamin D • Go to doctor and get tested • Sun Lamp
