Layout of exam • Firstly...make the correct choices • Small passage to read that will be an indicator for questions • 5 marks – Basic facts • 10 marks – Based on significance of an issue, person or theme. (Less focus onTacitus / Suet.) • 20 marks – Judgement question with for and against argument. T and S use to illustrate points. • 40 marks – statement given – argument needed with total use of T and S to show how sources affect judgement

  3. Most questions need you to use the writers... • In reference to Tacitus... • According to Suetonius... • The writers deal with this issue by... • Summed up by the writings of... • Both writers address the issue of... • Both writers agree that... Reference Comparison Concluding

  4. 5 mark questions • As stated previously, these are questions you either know, or do not know. (but should consist of elements you recognise) • They do not need to be lengthy • They do not need to be in sentences either (unless otherwise stated) • However, being 5 marks they are often the difference between final unit grades

  5. 10 mark questions To what extent did Tib. Career prepare him for role of emperor? Use Suetonius. • This needs to be approx 1 – ½ sides • It should largely support the statement BUT • Also show the other side of the argument • As stated , the source MUST be used to gain good marks.

Brief to set scene) • Accession AD 14/ 55yr/ Adopted by Aug AD 4 after death of other candidates / Quote (S) = ‘good qualities tipped the scale’ • This will set the tone for the positive/ negative and writings of (S)

  7. Start positive and end negative • Main body - Civil career, questor, praetor and consul v. Early, 5yrs tribune, triumph (link to Q) • Success of military career, Germany, Illyrian revolt, harsh discipline - only compared to Varus. (link to Q) • Odd behaviour, Capri, gloomy nature • (S) – focus on character bio/ contemporary writing • CONCLUSION – To some extent, but...

Tacitus Suetonius Historian and Equestrian order Similar to Pliny in writing style Far more anecdotal (story like) in 12 Caesers Portrays Tib. and Claud. by character traits. Set formula to his work: descriptions of appearance, omens, family history, quotes, and then a history • Orator + Senator • Fascinated by Republic • Similar to Sallust rather than Livy as historian (disgruntled) • Concerned with political history • Adept at making an effective point (damning asides) • Consistent in his views? Or wanting to show range of human behaviour

  9. 20 mark question How bad do you think Tiberius’ relationship with the Senate actually was during his rule? • Two clear sides of the argument need to be developed along with analysis of the sources (T) and (S) • 2-3 sides of writing needed

How bad do you think Tiberius’ relationship with the Senate actually was during his rule? • Intro – setting of the scene / uphold Senate responsibility/ partner/ similar to Aug / but as (T) quoted – ‘forgot how far...corrupted’ • Use the intro to show that this is a mixed question that has lots of input from the writers and plenty of evidence .

Start with BAD [Use writers as evidence, but also highlight their problems throughout.] • Intervening in Senate - monopolies • Sycophantic ‘fit to be slaves’ • Unclear and Tib. reactions • Fear of Sejanus - ‘relief in flattery’ (T) statues erected • Too much freedom – ‘as if Republic existed’ (T) Highlight – (T) very political, focus on Republic

  12. HOWEVER... Some good • Problem of Augustus’ rule as Tib. Genuinely hesitant. • Respect by Tib – honours • Diplomatic in Provincial issues – (T) has issues. • Helping senators financially – Hortensius’ children 200,000 • Widening of duties – legislative body, criminal court (treason trials) CONC– To what extent? Authors view = KEY!
