    • Hypothalamus

Ans definition
ANS – Definition

  • The system which regulates non-voluntary bodily functions, by means of reflex pathways.

  • Divided into PNS and SNS on the basis of anatomical, pharmacological and functional differences.

Ans functions
ANS – Functions

  • Responsible for homeostasis

  • Except for skeletal muscle all organs are supplied by the ANS.

  • Nerve terminals:

    • smooth muscle

    • Cardiac muscle

    • Glands

  • Includes enteric nervous system

Ans structure

Sympathetic nervous system
Sympathetic Nervous System

  • Output in thoracic and lumbar segments of spinal cord

  • Ganglia form sympathetic trunk

  • ACh released at preganglionic nerve endings

  • Adrenaline and NA released at postganglionic nerve endings

  • “Fight or flight”

Parasympathetic nervous system
Parasympathetic Nervous System

  • Output from cranial and sacral nerves

  • Ganglia near target organs

  • ACh released as NT at pre- and postganglionic nerve endings

  • “Rest and digest”

Hypothalamus
Hypothalamus

  • Part of brain

  • Forms floor of 3rd ventricle

  • Controlling area for ANS

    • SNS mostly posteromedial

    • PNS mostly anterolateral

  • Also temperature regulation and hormone secretion by pituitary
