Learning Design Principles • All qualifications should be based first and foremost on a thorough analysis of the needs of the healthcare service.  • Only after the purpose of a role and its competences have been specified should the appropriate level, and hence, type of qualifications be identified, commissioned and developed.

  5. The Partnership Skills for Health – learning design, HE strategy, Sector Qualification Strategy 4 LLNs (29 HEIs and 37 Fes) – vocational learners, progression agreements, employer engagement NHS London – Healthcare for London, workforce strategy, education commissioning

  6. The Process • Funding - £190K – matched funding of £180K • Consultation and conference • Expressions of Interest • 7 projects approved • Evaluation

The Projects • Supporting progression in mental health sector • LTC – expanding Band 4 roles • Acute care – nursing & midwifery workforce • Mental health – upskill project • LTC – learning modules for Asst Practitioners • Dual diagnosis in secure offender environments • Planned Care – infection control

  8. Successes • Secured match funding e.g. NHS London for 2 FDs in LTC • Development of work-based higher education • Built a collaborative “infrastructure” of wide range of stakeholders • Stimulated greater employer engagement and collaboration • Genuine model of co-investment

  9. Challenges • Embedding the projects into workforce strategies within Trusts • Sustainability of the projects after 2010 • Do FDs represent “real progression” – Apel, portability etc • Developing fit for purpose awards reflecting need for new roles
