Geography • Rolling hills and raging rivers help make this country a beautiful republic. • The green meadows and plentiful trees create a deep green color which gave this country the nickname the Emerald Isle. • A warm climate with gentle rains and warm winds contribute to the greenness. • A lot of the world’s peat is found in the bogs of this country.

  3. The People • Many of the people of this country trace their ancestry to the Celts. • The main languages here are English and Gaelic. • The Gaelic language has almost died out. • About 57% of the people live in cities and towns. • The population is 3.7 million. • The children like to play soccer and hurling, a game like field hockey.

  4. Economy • Farming is good because of the rainy climate and fertile soil. • The main food crop is potatoes. • Industry is also a developing here. • The economy mostly depends on the manufacture of machinery and transportation equipment.

  5. History • From 1100 t0 1900 the British governed this country. • This country gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1821. • There has been a lot of fighting about whether this country should be Catholic or Protestant. • In 1990, the people elected their first female president.

  6. NEWS • Two Gardai were killed when a stolen car struck their patrol car. Two boys aged 16 and 17 have been questioned about this disaster. • Unions should begin to draw up plans for a “Free for all” in the autumn , the general secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, Mr. Begg has said.
