  1. Natural Landforms and Vegetation

  2. The Continental Drift Alfred Wegner, a German scientist, developed a theory that suggested all the continents that we know today were once just a huge supercontinent, which began to split up over 100 million years ago.

  3. Evidence of the continental drift The easiest pattern to see happens when you move South America east across the Atlantic Ocean to meet Africa. The coastlines happen to fit together. Fossils found around the world provide more evidence that the continents where once connected.

  4. Plates The continental drift theory said that the earths crust is divided into large pieces called plates. When two plates meet one is forced over the other. As the plates slide over each other, the friction creates heat and magma is formed. This is how volcanoes are made.

  5. Landforms A landform is a natural feature of the earth's surface for example, volcanoes, shields, plains, fold mountains, plateausand valleys.

  6. Volcanoes And fold mountains Volcanoes are landforms created by magma escaping the earths surface. Fold mountains are the action of moving continents that create fold mountains by bending the rock upward.

  7. Plateaus and shields A plateau is a landform that was pushed by the continental drift. Usually it is a flat, high area. They are usually between mountain ranges. A shield is the base of a ancient mountain region. These mountains are worn away leaving a rocky landform.

  8. Plains and valleys A plain is a large, flat or gently sloping land that is usually formed under a large body of water. When the water disappeared, the bottom of the sea was revealed. A valley is a low area of land between hills or mountains, typically with a river or stream flowing through it.

  9. Vegetation Vegetation refers to plants that grow in a certain area. Natural vegetation means plants that are native to the certain area. There are not a lot of areas in the world that have natural vegetation. Humans are considered the most dangerous factors effecting vegetation.

  10. Soils The kind of soil in a specific area will determine the success of the natural vegetation. Soil contains moisture, air and organic material. Some soils are not very productive like desert soils for example. Desert soils are very sandy and don’t have much nutrients and is unable to retain water.
