  2. What is Co-op Education? A program which alternates periods of academic study with periods of work experience in accordance with the following criteria: • each work situation is developed and/or approved by the co-op department as a suitable learning situation • the co-op student is engaged in productive work • the co-op student receives remuneration • the co-op student's progress on the job is monitored by the co-op program staff • the co-op student's performance on the job is supervised and evaluated by the student's co-op employer As defined by the Canadian Association for Co-operative Education (CAFCE)

  3. What Does Co-op Look Like? • Alternating • 1 four month and 8 month work terms alternating between academic study. • Internship • 12 months of continuous employment with one employer. Start date in May, September or January. StFX Co-op works closely with local and national employers to develop challenging, career-related positions for our students.

  4. Why do Human Nutrition Students join Co-op? • Establish your career network. Make valuable employment contacts to help secure employment after graduation. • Become more aware of specializations in your area through a variety of work experiences. Explore different career options. • Build life-long friendships by connecting with talented and like-minded people through Co-op work placements.

  5. Earn • Students in the program typically earn between $12-24 an hour on co-op. • Typically work a minimum 35 hrs/wk. • With the proper budgeting co-op work terms can help offset other education expenses. • Complete Co-op 405 and earn 3 credits towards your degree.

  6. Learn • Co-op 110, 120 and 130 can help you land your dream job and help you to become an effective employee. • Gain an understanding of today’s workplace and the options available. • Learn about your skills, abilities, knowledge, and work preferences. • Polish your communication, teamwork, problem solving, and conflict management skills.

  7. Experience • Non-for-profit organizations • Corporate/ Private Sector Industry • Continuing Care Facilities or Hospitals • Provincial and Federal Government • Entrepreneurial Work Experience Co-op Staff work with students to develop a co-op plan that can include local, national and some international placements.

  8. Program Overview • Apply for the program • Register and complete Co-op sessions • Apply and secure co-op positions • After completing work term requirements, return to classes and complete COOP 405. • Students graduate with an enhanced degree program Co-op accept new applications in September or January
