  2. The American TV shows broadcastedduringthefirstdecadeofthiscentury (XXI) tooktheleadthatwaspreviousheld by Hollywood’s cinema, overthesecondhalfofthetwentiethcentury. We are living thethirdgoldenageoftelevision shows, justliketheonethattook place in the 70’s. The American TV shows havehadthreegoldenages in American televisionhistory: 1. Thefirst, in the late 40s andearly 50s. 2. Thesecond, rangingfromearly 80s tomid 90s. 3. Thethird, startswith CSI: CrimeSceneInvestigation (CBS: 2000 -) andTheWestWing(NBC: 1996-2006).   3. First Golden Age Thefirst Golden Ageoftelevision drama in theUnitedStatestook place duringthe 50’s, thankstoonehourlivebroadcastsrecorded in New York studios. Thecurrent shows are historicalsequelstoanthology series fromthefirstgoldenageof American TV (between 1948 and 1956). Theseepisodeswerecharacterized by: 1- Independentepisodeswith no evidenceofserialitybetweenthem, toenhance a single themeorplot. 2- Scripts which are closertothe radio andtheaterratherthanto audiovisual narratives. Second Golden Age Theincreasingcompetitionbetween cable andpremiumchannelslike HBO andShowtime (in 1981 reached 30% ofamericanhouses) willfacilitatethenewageofwhat Robert Thompson has calledtheSecond Golden Ageof American Drama. Thissecondperiodstartsduringthebeginningofthe 80’s, preciselywiththerolloutof "Hill Street Blues" andcontinuesuntilmid-90’swith "ER" (NBC: 1994-2009) (Thompson, 1996). Additionally, the director creates a show wherethecharactershave a collectivememoryandhistorythroughoutthewholeseason. This time starts at theendofthetwentiethcentury, withthebeginningof CSI: CrimeSceneInvestigation (CBS: 2000 -) andTheWestWing (NBC: 1996-2006). Theriseofqualitydramatic series leadsusto use theexpression ”The era ofthe drama" whenreferringtothecurrentfiction series, "TheWestWing" (1999-2006, NBC), "CSI" (2000 -, CBS), "24" (2001-2010, FOX), "House MD", (2004 -2011), "DesperateHousewives" (2004 -, ABC), "Lost" (2004-2010, ABC) or "Grey'sAnatomy" (2005 -, ABC). Thesequality series are consideredheirsofthecult series fromthe 90’s, like "TwinPeaks" (ABC 1990-91), "X-Files" (Fox, 1993-2002), "Northern Exposure" (CBS : 1990-1995) and "MurderOne" (ABC :1995-97). Thefocusofthiscampaignwaswerethecharacters living in eighthfictionalapartmentsonthe corner ofBroomeStreetandLudlowStreet. Sherlock is a sortofconsultant detective whosometimesworkswiththepolice. He appearstous as a fan ofnewtechnologiesandtheirapplications. SMS recievedorsent by thecharacters are displayedonthescreen, as so do Sherlock’sthoughtsanddeductions. In 24, thesplitscreentechniqueisthoroughlyusedduetotheshow's real time formatandsimultaneousmultipleplotlines. A splitscreenshowcasingmultiplecharactersandlocationsisalwaysfeaturedalongwiththetickingclockoneachreturnfrom a commercialbreak (theact-in clock). Additionally, the final few minutes ofalmosteveryepisode are prefaced by a splitscreen, oftenwithurgent music, toupdateviewersonthe status ofeachmajorcharacterandplotline as thehourends.
