  1. Couples Building Rock Solid Marriages “Your Heart, part 2, …thankful and joyous” The Body Part Series December 5, 2010

  2. You may have heard these quotes…. • “The hardest arithmetic to master is that which enables us to count our blessings.” • “All the good things we enjoy in life have taken the edge off our sense of gratefulness.” • “It’s ironic that the sheer volume of things we have to be thankful for makes us forget to be grateful for them.” • “We may be so fascinated by the spectacular that we miss out on the ordinary, and vice-versa.” • Billionaire Sir John Templeton, on wealth: “Gratitude. If you’re not grateful, you’re not rich, no matter how much you have.” • Can a thankful heart exists inside the believer, more and more disconnected from outside circumstances, even with all the marketing, and even with internally driven “want-to-be” character?

  3. Is Your Heart Joyful/Glad/Thankful? • Ps 4:7- “You have put gladness in my heart” • Ps 66:1- “..make a joyful noise unto the Lord…” • Ecc 9:9- “Live joyfully with the wife whom you love all your days….” • Psm 32:11- “Be glad in the Lord and rejoice…” • Rom 5:11- “…rejoice in the Lord, through whom we have received reconciliation” • Rom 14:17- “…for the kingdom of the Lord is not food and drink, but right living, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” • Gal 5:22- “But, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace…..”

  4. At your tables, read Colossians 1:9-17 1. What are we asked to do?2. Why should we give thanks? • …be filled with the knowledge of His will • …have a walk worthy • …being fruitful • …increasing in knowledge • …strengthened by His power • …giving thanks to the Father who has done what?: qualified us delivered/rescued us transferred/brought us redeemed us

  5. Sources of a Thankful Heart • A Word-filled life keeps our focus where it belongs--Col 1:9; 2:7; 3:16 • The Spirit-filled Life and Walk are vital sources of thankfulness--Eph 5:15-20; Gal 5 • Remembering who we are as God’s children--Col 1:9-17; Acts 26:17-18 • Remembering His promise-- Jer 29:11-13 • Remembering to what we have been called--Col 3:15-17; Hebrews 12

  6. He has brought us from….. 1. From darkness to light 2. From slavery to freedom 3. From condemnation to forgiveness 4. From the power of Satan to the power of God 5. From barrenness to fruitfulness 6. From lies to the Truth 7. From death to Life 8. From chaos to meaning 9. From despair to hope 10. From self to Him 11. From sadness to joy 12. From a hard heart to a THANKFUL HEART

  7. How about Thankfulness for others and Joy because of them?

  8. At your tables • Now, alone, with pen and paper----- • I am most thankful for these 3 things in my life: • I am most thankful for my spouse for these 3 reasons:

  9. Some reasons to consider “I’m most thankful for my spouse because he/she________________.” • …has my best interest at heart. • …loves me for who I am. • …knows me and gets me and likes the package. • …lets me be vulnerable w/o judgment/ridicule. • …is my best friend and I can say anything. • …respects me beyond measure. • …lets me love her/him • …trusts me. • …is God’s gift and perfect prescription for me. • …is an equal partner in provision and protection • …is ‘all in’. • …intimate in all ways---intellectual, emotional, Spiritual, recreation, physical. • …is hot, that’s what

  10. Answer these right now 1. Are there areas of your relationship with Christ where you need to more regularly express thankfulness to Him? 2. Have you appreciated and thanked your mate for their attributes and the many things they do for you, or are you focusing on the circumstances of your daily reaction to their disappointing performance? And….what about your performance? 3. Give yourself a heart check-up---are you bitter and sad over all your unmet expectations, or is your heart thankful and joyful because of the expectations which have been met by your Lord and your God-given mate? 4. Compare your 2 “thankful for” lists with each other (your life and your mate)
