During the early 1800’s, a solider named Jose Gerasio Artigas organized an army to fight for independence from Spain. In 1811, Artigas and his forces laid siege to Montevideo. Just when they had already defeated the Spaniards, Portuguese troops from Brazil attacked both the Spanish and Uruguayans armies. Rather than submit to either Spanish or Portuguese rule, Artigas led his forces and thousands of Uruguayans into the countryside leaving much of Uruguay abandoned. The Spanish surrendered Montevideo to troops in 1814. This surrender permanently ended Spanish control of Uruguay.

Indians were the first people to live in what is now Uruguay. They gathered wild fruit and seeds and hunted game for food. The Charrua Indians, the largest group, were a warlike tribe. In 1516, the Spanish navigator Juan Diaz de Solis became the first white person to land in Uruguay. But when he and part of his crew went ashore, the Charrua killed them. Because Uruguay lacked gold and other riches, it attracted few other Europeans until the later 1600’s.

Geological Setting and Discovery Potential

Crystalline terrains crop out mainly in the south of Uruguay and are an extension of the Brazilian Shield. The crystalline outcrop area covers nearly 44% of the national territory and it is divided into two geochronologic provinces: a Craton province dating more than 1800 million years and an Oriental province between 700 and 600 million years old.

The geology of Uruguay consists of a basement of Pre-Cambrian supracrustal rocks partially covered by younger sediments and flood basalts. The supracrustallithologic package includes a broad spectrum of intrusive, extrusive and sedimentary rocks ranging from large alkaline crystalline plutons, belts of felsic to ultrabasicvolcanics and a full suite of sediments.
