  1. Specific Powers of Congress Get your notes out. Continue from where we left off from ‘US Congress and the Economy’

  2. The 17th Amendment 17th Amendment – ratified in 1913; changed the method of electing United States Senators to direct election by the people; the Constitution originally required senators to be chosen by the state legislatures. Impact – changing to popular election of senators corrected an undemocratic part of the original Constitution. The legislative selection system had been subject to bribery and corruption. It also was not uniform in all states: some states let the voters “nominate” senators which the legislature then approved. With the change, however, candidates had to compete for the votes of a large electorate, requiring huge sums of money.

  3. Congress’ Foreign Trade Policy Foreign Trade Policy? A set of rules and regulations in how the US deals with other countries and trading goods. The role of the US Congress in setting international trade policy includes: Tariffs Quotas and Sanctions Does not include PATENTS

  4. Because its in the US

  5. How to deal with unfriendly government’s The US Congress might legislate … sanctions (trade related penalties) Which could result in an… embargo (restriction of commerce with a country)

  6. PATENTS The US Constitution protects people who create or invent products. They issue patents which give exclusive rights to the inventor This allows them to make money from their innovations!

  7. Cabinet Members George Washington was the first to have a group of close advisors. They were called his Cabinet. They helped him make decisions and play a very important role. How are they placed in office? They are nominated by the President, confirmed by the Senate

  8. WHAT HAPPENS IF? Sometimes a member of Congress wins the Presidential Election What happens to the vacant seat left when they leave office to become President? The Governor names the replacement! Name an example of this… POTUS Barack Obama was a senator from Illinois
