  2. Cultures • There are many types of groups in Northern West of America like Samish, Tulalip, Puyallup, etc. • There are more than 20 types of groups. • Native American people were living in the Northern West area and Alaska until the European explorers came about 1492 A.D. • They usually eat animals (deer), fishes, plants (fruits), etc. • There are few people who are completely NativeAmericans, and some people still follow some of the culture, like their art. • The name of the culture (festival, or celebration) is called “Potlatch”

  3. Map/ location Most of the masks were found in British Columbia (Canada), Oregon, Montana, Idaho and Washington State. Most of the ones with fur are from northern parts like Alaska. This Mask was probably found at today’s Alaska These places are where they found most of the masks.

  4. Special name of the masks • Potlatch masks • Kwakiutl masks. These two cultures are almost the same.

  5. Festival and ceremonies • These masks are used in the festival “Potlatch.” (There are another seasonal festivals but this festival is the special one) • Potlatch is a celebration or the festival which the master of the festival gives some important things for that person as: • Food • Cloths • Slaves (rich people give) • And boat etc. • There are “totem poles” which is cut from wood and paint (most of the colors used in the masks black, red, and green。

  6. Festival and ceremonies • The more high-quality things the founder of the festival and his family give, the people would respect them. • Every IMPORTANT events the man had is a time for potlatch festival (like birth, marriage, death, etc.).

  7. How the masks are made • Most of the masks are made out of wood, and colored with paint. • But we didn’t find how they made the masks. • There are many types of culture in Northwest America because there are many different groups existed on Northwest America. • In our assumption, the main material is wood. • They used different colors like white, red, black, blue, etc. • According to our research, there was no meaning for the color. • There are many types of masks like: • Human (Humanoid) • Grizzly Bear (or any other animals) • Eagle (or any other birds)
