  1. Modernization and New Imperialism Instructor Pacas

  2. Modernization • Industrialization • Free (Wage) labor • Adopt concept of a nation • Modernization (as a European development) necessitates the adoption of imperialism.

  3. Industrialization

  4. Industrialization • Acquire natural resources to mass produce goods • Markets to sell goods for profit • Secure global spheres of influence to safe-guard industrial interests.

  5. Free (Wage) Labor

  6. Free (Wage) Labor • Pay laborers a low wage • From this wage laborers expected to finance their upkeep-food, lodging and other living expenses. • From their wages, laborers reinvested into the system by buying the goods that they produced in the factories that employed them.

  7. Free (Wage) Labor cont. • Have laborers compete with each other for these jobs. • Hire the laborers willing to get paid the least. • Large population ensures a source of cheap labor. • Laborers turned into a interchangeable part of the machines in factories.

  8. Adopt Concept of a Nation • Because the Industrial nations of Europe were traditionally poor in natural resources, they needed to conquer other territories to supply them with natural resources to feed European industry. • Modernization necessitates imperialism

  9. Adopt Concept of a Nation • In order to achieve these goals the imperialist industrial community needs to adopt a broader view of itself in relation to the world. • Affiliations need to be transformed from small regional/parochial to a larger community. • The nation. • Thus the adoption of a national affiliation, nationalism, and the belief of national superiority are important factors necessary to fuel the drive towards conquest of other territories.

  10. Adopt Concept of a Nation

  11. Industrial Nations…most do not possess many natural resources to feed their industry Southern hemisphere wealthy in natural resources forced to become export oriented economies
