Building materials are the basis for building performance CEPMC - Council of European Producers of Materials for Construction: • Buildings contribute for more than 40% on EU’s energy consumption and CO2-emission • 85% environmental load dwellings during the use phase: info technical & environmental information • Selection of building products on environmental performance should be done by assessment at building level • “Environmental Product Declerations” are the basis for the assessment: LCA-based

EPD’s in the Building Sector Environmental Product Declaration – Many initiatives from industry, government programs, commercial interests, etc. – Based on various, similar, sometimes comparable schemes – EPD’s already available in many EU-countries: Germany, France, UK, The Netherlands, UK, Sweden, Denmark… – EPD data available; on-line. data base: Simapro; INIES, GABI, …..

ISO/TS 21931-1: Sustainability in Building Construction – Framework for Methods of Assessment for Environmental Performance of Construction Works Based on the premise that sustainable construction brings about the required performance with the least unfavorable environmental impact, while encouraging economic, social and cultural improvement at a local, regional and global level. Aims: • Examine the ability of the building to contribute to sustainable development with regard to environmental dimension • Communicate and/or improve the building’s environmental performance of the building

  9. Minimum Requirements for the Assessment of the Environmental Performance of a Building Valid for; A) Newly built or refurbished buildings B) Existing buildings (in chapter 5 of the ISO 21931) • Documentation of the assessment method • Elements of the assessment method

  10. Issues for Environmental Assessment Environmental performance will be assessed according to environmental issues that are of concern to the various interested parties:

  11. Issues of Concern - Environmental Impacts of Buildings • Climate change, • destruction of ozone layer, • destruction of non-renewable sources, • formation of photochemical oxidants, • acidification of land and water and • eutrophication

Aims and Targets of the Turkish Construction Technology Platform • Create a platform where all the actors of construction sector can come together for ideas exchange. • Draw a road-map for the sector with an aim to develop short/medium/long term strategies. • Encourage the sector members to have more active participation in the EU Framework Programs, as well as to search way for the more efficient use of national resources. • Coordinate research work operated separately in various fields of the sector. • Encourage R&D work and to establish a dialogue for research-oriented partnerships within the sector.
