At this time African-Americans were segregated. 1955, Beginning of Civil Race Movement. • The Movement in United States is trying to outlaw racial discrimination against African Americans. • Also called The Southern Freedom Movement. • African-Americans were not allowed to vote, denied economic opportunities, and divided into separate “colored” areas. • 1955, Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat, and African-Americans boycott buses. • Used sit-ins and freedom rides to protest. • This movement ended up leading to the equality of African-Americans with the rest of the population.
