  3. Leadership Perspective • A perspective is the way in which a person views the relationship between aspects of a subject. • Anything that is not cold hard fact is tainted by perspective. • An effective leader realizes that their perspective must be appropriate to their position.

  4. Types of leadership perspective • One model used by the Air Force separates leadership perspectives into three basic categories. • Tactical • Operational • Strategic • This is a generalization but is a fairly effective model.

  5. Tactical Perspective • The best way to get the job done. • Can be subdivided into two schools of thought: • Effective • Efficient • Decision is how to do it?

  6. Operational Perspective • Difficult to define. • Generally characterized as managing and directing multiple tactical units. • Decision is what to do?

  7. Strategic Perspective • Focus is on the big picture. • If the desired effect is not achieved then it doesn’t matter how effective or efficient the execution was. • You can win the battle but lose the war. • Decision is why we are doing?

  8. Examples • The best way to move across open areas under direct fire is successive bounding. • It is essential that we win the hearts of the locals in this area or all our efforts are in vain. • We have a search area of 100 square miles and only three ground search units.

  9. Summary • Leadership perspective • Types of leadership perspective • Strategic Perspective
