Common Core: Standards for Literacy in Science and Technical Subjects. • Reading and Writing occurs across all content areas • K-5 combines science/technical literacy standards, in 6-8 they are side-by-side. • Focus on using science content to instruct not only science content but reading and writing in science • Critical piece of College and Career Readiness

  3. Science Education for Public Understanding (SEPUP) • Inquiry model • Issues based • Literacy focused • Hands-on approach • Aligns with Common Core

  4. Life Science Lab: Breakdown A study of mechanical and chemical digestion Mechanical digestion Chemical Digestion

  5. Doing the Lab • Watch & discuss demo. • Design your lab (hypothesis and procedure). • Conduct your experiment. Remember to collect data and observations. • Graph results. • Group discussion. • Analysis, experimental error, new questions.

  6. What is Common Core about the Breakdown Lab? • read and comprehend science/technical text independently and proficiently • summarizes text • following procedure • writing frame for lab • writing a replicable procedure • making and analyzing the graph • developing and writing conclusion • style of writing/ organization of writing appropriate to task and audience

  7. Clean Up • Unused tablets in wrapper to me. • Lid on Vinegar. • Measuring cup and SEPUP tray rinsed clean. • All supplies to designated location. • All papers cleared and chairs pushed in.
