  1. We dedicate this presentation to the people of Aceh We remember those who lost their lives We celebrate the people’s resilience after the flood We pledge to raise funds to provide Water Purifying units to areas in Aceh

  2. Picture this ….. • A whole stretch of coastal area, equivalent to that from Hull to Cardiff, flattened 5 kilometres inland • Add to that, half of Ireland • An entire infrastructure that has been destroyed • No more local government since most of the people have either died or have family and kin who are dead • Water pipes, drainage, sewage, irrigation, filtration, water treatment systems – all destroyed. Moreover, many of those needed to run and manage these systems are now dead.

  3. Clean water is the key to the process of recovery But even now, 6 months away ………water is still transported in tanks and there is not enough for everybody. This is not sustainable and we face the approach of the monsoon when it will get much worse.

  4. We are thankful to large charities, for they provide the backbone that provides immediate relief. As we turn from immediate relief towards medium and longer-term recovery, smaller entities become more significant, because they provide the infrastructure to make specific local projects work.

  5. Tsunami Recovery Indonesia is a small entity consisting of people who share a common desire to help others in great need. We are doing this through our Operation Clean Water project. The mobile water treatment units that we will provide will save lives and allow real recovery to happen, because the deliverable is sustainable, locally appropriate and immediately effective. Thank you for your support For more info, please see our website: www.tsunami-ocw.org

  6. A small entity like Tsunami Recovery Indonesiais able to make specific projects work, because it does not have the hassle experienced by large organisations. This is what we are doing with the Operation Clean Water project. The mobile water treatment units that we provide will save lives and allow real recovery to happen, because the deliverable is sustainable, locally appropriate and immediately effective.

  7. TSUNAMI RECOVERY INDONESIA A small Association, specifically focusing on Aceh. It funds operations that will provide the necessary means to support the recovery and the re-development of areas affected by the disaster. Our immediate aim To counter the water problems which have arisen since the tsunami destroyed most of the water infrastructure of the province Through Operation Clean Water Aceh

  8. The solution: Mobile water treatment units

  9. THE BASIC FACTS • One water treatment unit will supply 85,000 litres of water per day which can keep 3000 people alive each day. • It will be constructed from components within Indonesia. • It is mobile and simple to operate. • It will use local expertise, to deal with on-site issues, such as water turbidity.

  10. The way forward • £13,000 buys one such unit • Another £1000 provides the running cost for 6 months

  11. In practise, Operation Clean Water Aceh • Is a tangible project and progress can be tracked • Is working with people who are knowledgeable and well respected in Indonesia • Is supporting the efforts of the Indonesian people to sustain recovery by promoting self-sufficiency • Is eager to make a difference before the monsoon season strikes

  12. In short … Individuals and groups in Indonesia have assembled together to make up a recovery support system to provide life-saving drinking water for grief-stricken Aceh and surrounding areas. What they don’t have is the means to pay for and build these water treatment units.

  13. We can be the active catalyst to start this process. Please help. The tsunami we could not stop. But we can help to avoid the death of more people

  14. We have raised funds so far to provide one water treatment unit. We are proud to be part of a chain that will support 3000 people every day with clean water. We will continue to raise funds and as such to keep the memory of what has happened alive – as it remains for many people in Aceh and its surrounding areas.
