  1. CCD Imaging of Variable Stars Kimberly Anderson Joshua Smith December 3, 2002

  2. Outline • Significance of Variable Star research • Process of data collection and submission • Example of data that we submitted

  3. What are Variable Stars? • Vary in intensity • Two types: • Intrinsic: internal changes • Extrinsic: external effects

  4. American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO) • Consists of independent observers, gathering and submitting data • Analyzing data of variable stars creates better understanding of astronomical phenomena

  5. Capturing Variable Star Image • Attach CCD camera • Focus • Capture image, check with star chart • Determine best exposure time

  6. Analysis of CCD Image • Adjust brightness • Identify variable star • Find relative magnitude • Cross check magnitude using second star • Submit data with observation time (Julian date)

  7. Light Curve Example: U Aur

  8. Light Curve Example: VW Hyi

  9. Weblog • Used weblog to journal progress, thoughts and reactions • Available at: http://macman.ross.clarkson.edu

  10. Conclusion • Disappointed that we were only able to make observations once • Learned the significance of variable stars and some possibilities in astronomy using computer technology
