Making Chambers Greener With the iRobot Create Daniel Bernstein, Jonah Galeota-Sprung, Steph Meador, Matt Mohorn, Evan Welchman, and Laurie Heyer Navigation Detecting Open Windows The Energy Problem Once the robot has taken a picture, it must analyze it to determine if the window is indeed open. It is common practice in Chambers to open windows during the day. The problem is that these windows are frequently left open all night, which causes the automatic temperature regulation system of the building to waste a large amount of energy. In order to teach the robot how to navigate chambers we must first know precisely where each door is. We measure this by manually guiding the robot from the end of the hallway to each door and asking the robot how far it has traveled. We then load this data into a program installed on the onboard command module and the robot uses this to go from door to door. http://media.charlotteobserver.com/smedia/2010/10/21/16/LNM_ghosts_2.standalone.prod_affiliate.138.jpg Our Solution The images are processed by the onboard computer as above. These processed images are then classified as ‘open’ or ‘closed’ by a neural network, a kind of very simple artificial brain. We are programming a small iRobot Create, controlled by an onboard “Command Module” and armed with a webcam, to navigate one floor of Chambers and find open windows.  It should be able to enter each classroom off of the main hallway (since these are the only classrooms with windows) and take a picture of the windows in each room.  The robot will then process the images and determine the status of the windows, which it will be able to report back to some human agent. Once the open window shave been determined, the robot sends a Very Polite Email to the professor who last had class in that room, reminding them to please remember to close them next time, thank you very much.
