  2. Background • Written to Jewish- Christians expelled from Rome • Written around the end of the first century • Many doubts on the reliability of the Gospel’s sources • Focused on theology • John’s life c. AD 6 – c. 100 • John’s symbol is an eagle

  5. Word of God • Christology is the study of the person Jesus • John sees Jesus as • the “Word of God” or logos • God the Father

  6. Book of Signs • Book is organized around 7 miracles or works, each contain a sign or meaning • Water to Wine • Cure of the Official’s Son • Cure of the Paralytic at the Pool • Feeding of the 5,000 • Walking on water • Cure of blind man • Raising of Lazarus • Gospel contains long discourses after each story • Helps one understand and have faith in the passage

Book of Glory • Gospel of John focuses greatly on God’s revelation • Jesus’ divinity makes God’s invisible power visible • Second half of the Gospel is the Book of Glory • Last Supper Discourses (13-17) • Eucharist seemed shocking to many followers • Jesus mediates the supper between his followers and God like a priest • Jesus preaches equal service from all disciples • Jesus’ Death and Resurrection (18-20) • Depicts the glory of Jesus’ ascension • Tells that Jesus asked his followers to carry on his work
