  1. Overview • Kinds of Tithes • Tithing and The Law of Moses • Refutation of ALL Pro-’Tithing’ Arguments • Final Thoughts

  2. Kinds of Tithes (or ‘tenths’) • Compulsory (required by law or command) • People paid a general tithe to the Levites (Num 18:21). • Levites paid a tithe of the general tithe to the priests (Num 18:25-31). • People kept a tithe to pay for their annual pilgrimage to Jerusalem (Deu 14:22-26). • People paid a tithe for the poor, the orphans and the widows (Deu 14:28-29). • Voluntary (not required by law or command) • Jacob vowed a tenth (Gen 28:20-22). • Abram gave a tenth of spoils to Melchizedek (Gen 14:18-20).

  3. Tithing and The Law of Moses • ‘Law of Moses’ (first 5 books of the Bible) was a complete religious and social system. • Only ONE LAW given to Moses (was not divided as ‘dietary’, ‘ceremonial’, ‘sacrificial’, and so on). • Tithing was commanded to Israel in ‘The Law’. • Tithing IS ‘The Law’; can’t be separated (Jam 2:10). • God was not pleased with offerings given by those in sin or having an impure motive. (Gen 4; Isa 1; Mat 23:23)

  4. Refutations • “Tithing was before The Law.” • FALSE: Wasn’t commanded until Law of Moses; abolished along with ENTIRE SYSTEM by institution of New Covenant (Heb 9 and10). • “Tithing is how God’s work is supported.” • FALSE: 2 Cor 9 – “Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion…” • Tithing keeps the Devil from attacking my finances.” • FALSE: Mal 3:8-11 out of context (for Israel/‘devourer’ is locusts). • “I tried tithing and it works.” • FALSE: Tithing based on false motive; God does not honor it. • “The Lord convicted me to tithe.” • FALSE: The Holy Spirit convicts based on TRUTH – not lies and error. • “Jesus is my Melchizedek!” (the latest tithing scam…) • FALSE: Heb 10:12 – “Every priest stands daily…but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins or all time, SAT DOWN at the right hand of God…”
