Cultural Competence Committee at SES and SMS I am happy to inform you that our schools and community members have joined together to form the Cultural Proficiency Committee.  We have met twice and plan to meet monthly.  We are committing to cultural competence as an integral component of all activities in our organization.  There is no one method of getting started, but our committee has planned some activities with the support of our PTA's, and we are currently working to establish a mission statement to articulate principles, rationale and values for our organizations.  Currently, our committee is represented by parents, teachers, community members, QAC employees, and PTA. Food Lion Math Night will be April 30th from 6-7:30pm in Millington. Sudlersville Elementary School Students Celebrate African American History Month      Students at Sudlersville Elementary School celebrated African American History Month in February.  They researched influential African Americans who made significant contributions to our country.  Students completed their book reports and displayed them on a cereal box.      Pictured are the following second grade students. April 7-11th Fiesta Family Night Wednesday, April 9th 5:00-7:00pm Food – Games – Prizes Shop the book fair for a chance to hit the piñata! Principal Gets "Pied" on Pi Day On March 14, 2014, the principal at Sudlersville Elementary School, Mrs. Michele Hampton, got "pied" five times by students at each grade level.  Pi Day was celebrated on March 14th.  The SES math enthusiasts realize that Pi is an irrational number, 3.14.  This activity gave the SES students an opportunity to be creative with math. Partnering for Youth after school program initiated this activity as a Service Learning Project.  Students donated 759 non-perishable foods to the local food pantry at the Sudlersville Methodist Church.  As an incentive, students were able to "pie" their principal.  They enjoyed that!! SUDLERSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A Title 1 School & Judy Center Partner APRIL 2014 Sudlersville Elementary School Students Utilize Technology The fourth grade students at Sudlersville Elementary School are utilizing Netbooks during math instruction.  Since Sudlersville Elementary School is a school-wide Title I school, Title I funding supported this initiative.  "Students find  the use of technology is a learning experience and an adventure," said Mrs. Michele Hampton, principal.  Students are viewed adding and subtracting fractions during their math class in Mrs. Settelmaier's class.  "We enjoy seeing the  influence of technology  throughout the school.  Many of the programs students are using are web based and can be accessed at home, as well as, school," said Mrs. Hampton.  "I learned how to add and subtract fractions," said Nathan Crabill, fourth grade student. SUDLERSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A Title 1 School & Judy Center Partner APRIL 2014 Pre-K News Grade 2 News Kindergarten News We are looking forward to sharing your child's progress at the upcoming parent conference time.  One of the topics to be discussed will be "polishing" your child's reading skills as he/she prepares for first grade.  It is important that your child recognize simple words.  It is also important that your child understands what he/she is reading.  We will be discussing strategies to improve your child's comprehension.  If you have any questions that come to mind, about any topic,  after our conference, please contact your child's teacher. A happy spring to everyone! We hope the weather will finally begin to cooperate! It seems that our students are suffering from “cabin fever” and it will be nice when they finally get outside to play for recess. Please dress children appropriately depending on the forecast. Parent - Teacher conferences will be held only on Thursday, April 3 and Friday, April 4. Please make every effort to attend. If you need to change the time, contact your child’s teacher. Reading, writing and math continue to be our fundamental priorities. This month we will continue learning reading strategies and practicing fluency in literacy block, concentrate on improving our writing skills, work and adding and subtracting 3 digit numbers and begin geometry. We will also finish our science unit on Earth and Space. In the next few weeks or so, permission slips for our field trip will be going home. We will visit The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michael’s, MD on Thursday, May 29th. This will be an extended day trip. All parents are welcome. Please look for information to come home.  Let’s remember to read, read, read!!! It is hard to believe it is April. We will be having our Easter celebration including an Easter egg hunt and yummy snack on Thursday, April 17th. In the next few weeks or so, permission slips will be going home for our field trip to Godfrey's Farm. Please be on the look out for these slips. Parent-Teacher conferences will begin on Wednesday, April 2nd for Pre-K. We look forward to meeting with everyone for Parent-Teacher conferences. We are beginning our Dinosaur Unit. We will learn about what they looked like, how they moved, and what they ate. I am sure the children will enjoy all the activities that are planned for this unit. Please continue to practice counting, identifying numbers, as well as identifying uppercase and lowercase letters. Thanks again for your continued support. The Pre-K Team Grade 1 News Welcome to April.  Hopefully warmer weather will follow.  In math we are moving our focus from addition to subtraction.  Please continue to practice the basic facts with your child.  In social studies we are learning about different cultures.  I am sure your child would be interested to find out where your family came from.  In science we have begun a chapter on matter.  Look around for examples of solids, liquids and gases.  As always, remember to read, read, read and complete the reading logs.  We look forward to meeting with everyone at conferences. AWESOME APRIL! Happy spring! The students worked very hard last month on the Math and Reading MSA tests. Results should be arriving in the mail sometime in the summer. We look forward to discussing your child’s progress during the parent conferences on April 3rd and 4th, 2014. Please contact your child’s teacher if you do not have a scheduled conference. In Math, we completed Topic 9~ “Understanding Fractions” and just began Topic 10~ “Fraction Comparison and Equivalence.” Topic 10 focuses on expressing whole numbers as fractions, and recognizing fractions that are equivalent to whole numbers. Please continue to read with your child and complete the weekly reading logs. A few important dates are listed below for the month: Field trips Thank you for the parents that have already sent in payments for the May and June field trips.  The trips will cost $20 each and we have provided you with an option to pre-pay.  Field trip forms will be sent home about a month prior to the trip. Content Math- We are still emerged in fractions.  Students should be able to compare fractions, add and subtract numbers with common denominators, and find the unit fractions.  Social Studies-  We are in the middle of two units.  Students are learning about Maryland as a new state and how Marylanders were impacted by the Civil War. Writing-  Students are learning about building paragraphs, creating thesis statements, and support their opinions through writing.  Literacy Block- varies based on classroom Please continue working with your students on Reading and Math homework.  These skills will help them to be successful when they move onto 5th grade.

SUDLERSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A Title 1 School & Judy Center Partner APRIL 2014 Health Room April is Sports Eye Safety Month Each year there are about 40,000 sports related eye injuries in this country. More than one third of these cases are children. Ninety percent of these injuries could be prevented if children wore proper protective eyewear made from polycarbonate plastic. Many sports, such as basketball, baseball, football, soccer, hockey, golf, lacrosse, racquet sports and water sports have the potential of causing serious eye injuries. Whatever sport you participate in call your eye care professional for recommendations of appropriate protective eyewear. Prescription eyeglasses do not offer protection. Summer is right around the corner. Did you know that children should not play with sparklers? These sticks of fire can burn as hot as 1800 degrees and children find them irresistible. They can cause permanent eye damage such as vision loss and blindness. Save your sight. Protect your eyes! **ATTENTION PARENTS** In Maryland, new immunization requirements will begin this September in the new 2014/2015 school year which will affect students entering Kindergarten and 7th grades. New Requirements for the 2014/2015 school year are as follows: • 2 doses of Varicella vaccine (chickenpox) to enter Kindergarten • 1 dose of Tdap vaccine (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) to enter 7th grade • 1 dose of Meningococcal vaccine (MCV4) to enter 7th grade Please check with your doctor to see if your child has already received these vaccines. Our records may just need to be updated. You may receive these vaccinations from your child’s doctor. Please do not hesitate to take care of this matter because there will be a 20 day cut off once school resumes next year and any child who is not up to date will have an automatic suspension until the requirements are met. 8. SUDLERSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A Title 1 School & Judy Center Partner APRIL 2014 Parent Involvement Parent/Teacher conferences should be an informative and rewarding experience. Below are five tips that can help you have a more successful Parent/Teacher conference: 1) Plan for it. Before you come to your conference, write out questions you would like to ask. What are my child’s strengths and weaknesses? 2) Keep an open mind. Your goal is to work for cooperation between you and your child’s teacher. Even if the teacher says something you disagree with, try to listen to what he or she has to say. 3) Ask to see your child’s work. Here is no better way to see how your child is progressing than to look at his or her school work. 4) Ask for suggestions. If your child is doing well, ask what you can do to keep things on a positive track. If there are problems, ask what you can do to help. 5) Clarify and summarize as you go. Teachers sometimes use educational buzzwords. If you don’t understand something the teacher says, just ask! Computer Lab availability for parents during Parent/Teacher conferences: Thursday, April 3rd 12 p.m. - 3 p.m. Friday, April 4th 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. This is an opportunity for parents to use the computers for internet access for school related activities. Feel free to stop in the Computer Lab during these times. The Parent Resource Center is open anytime, but be sure to stop by during the conferences. Check out the many items available such as: “We Both Read “ series books available in both English and Spanish, along with a CD of Reading Comprehension Quizzes to use at home. We also have “We Read Phonics” books (K-2), “You Read to Me, I’ll Read to You” books (K-2), “Half and Half” books with a great story and cool facts, “Green Light Readers” books for beginning readers that includes fun age-appropriate activities for each story and a book and CD entitled Involving Parents in Their Children’s Reading Development. OLWEUS has begun!  You may hear your children talking about classroom meetings.  The month of April teachers will be discussing the first two rules of OLWEUS; 1.  We will not bully others. 2. We will try to help student who are bullied. Please help us to reinforce this information at home. 4th grade will be participating in the Think First Stay Safe program during the month of April.  Children will be receiving a booklet from QAC Social Services.  We will be discussing personal safety issues.   Due to time constraints, not all lessons will be covered but please sit down with your fourth grade students and discuss this important safety information with them.  They often have many questions that we just don't have enough time to answer. If you haven't registered your new student for Pre-K or K, please make an appointment as soon as possible so we can plan for next year.
