  1. Second Seminar Cape Program for Rural Innovation CAPRI Orientation on the project Project components

  2. Overall objective CAPRI • Training and education delivered by CIAT contributes to the improvement of the extension delivery services in support of land reform beneficiaries and emerging farmers in the Cape provinces

  3. Specific objectives CAPRI • Staff at CIAT has the necessary competencies to effectively deliver input to provincial extension policy development and implementation through training programs and courses • CIAT effectively delivers education and training on agricultural extension, responsive to the needs of the developing agricultural sector in general and the emerging farmers in particular.

  4. Project strategy • Training and extension policy revision being supported by empirical research which aims to capture transformation patterns and processes • Contribute to extension policy review in the 3 Provincial Departments of Agriculture through exchange of ideas, perspectives and experiences

  5. Project components • Curriculum innovation: a new B. Agric. in Extension and Rural Innovation and revised Diploma Course with E learning component • In service training of extension staff in the 3 Cape Provincial Departments of Agriculture (PDA’s) • Research (M.Sc. and Ph.D. students) • Contribute to interactive extension policy development at the PDA’s • Improve CIAT support structures in project management and administration

Summary overview situation November 2007 (after 2 years) • In service training on track • New B.Agric. and revised Diploma course available but staffing problems • Research: • research agenda identified • 8 M.Sc. students started • Ph.D. ideas reviewed: combined programs with South African Universities • More details tomorrow
