  1. Using the MUN Proxy Server Instructions for Information Services January 2006 Lisa Goddard

  2. Current State of Affairs • Users must login to proxy before they click a link to any restricted resource http://www.library.mun.ca • Proxy rewrites all restricted URLs http://www.jstor.org.qe2a-proxy.mun.ca/journals/00084239.html

  3. Problems with Current Approach • Users don’t distinguish between restricted resources and free resources • Users enter catalogue and eindexes without logging in • Users don’t understand how to establish and maintain their proxy sessions

  4. Proposed Approach Wrap all restricted links with proxy login URL: http://qe2a-proxy.mun.ca/Login?url= e.g. Patrologia Latinae http://pld.chadwyck.com/ http://qe2a-proxy.mun.ca/Login?url=http://pld.chadwyck.com/ The proxy login URL is always the same regardless of the target database.

  5. Remote Users • Remote users are prompted to login as soon as they click on the URL to a restricted resource e.g. Patrologia Latinae http://qe2a-proxy.mun.ca/Login?url=http://pld.chadwyck.com/ • Each subsequent restricted page is passed through the proxy

  6. On-campus Users • On-campus users (includes MUN dial-up) are passed through transparently. • Subsequent restricted pages are not passed the proxy server.

  7. Implementation - Resolver MUN Resolver • All restricted URLS are already wrapped • Browse Resolver for “Mammalian Biology” • The journal link contains the proxy login url: http://qe2a-proxy.mun.ca/login?url=http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/16165047

  8. Implementation - Catalogue • All “Dictionary of Literary Biography” URLS are already wrapped. • Search Catalogue for “Dictionary of Literary Biography{440}” • The 856 link contains the proxy login URL: http://qe2a-proxy.mun.ca/Login?url=http://infotrac.galegroup.com /itweb/sain66118?db=GLD

  9. Implementation - Catalogue • Ebrary monographs subscription (~20,000 titles) • Safari Techbooks subscription (~300 titles) • Serials Solutions records (~13,000 titles) • Eindex URLs • Other restricted resources in the catalogue and on the website gradually and manually.

  10. Article Level Links Deep link to an article within Emerald Insight: http://www.emeraldinsight.com/10.1108/02640470310509117 Proxied deep link to the same article: http://qe2a-proxy.mun.ca/Login?url=http://www.emeraldinsight.com/10.1108/02640470310509117

  11. Article Level Links Deep link to WilsonWeb: http://vnweb.hwwilsonweb.com/hww/jumpstart.jhtml?recid=0bc05f7a67b1790ea43489dcca60c352d8c5349eb783c137569b18e5e1c649c777df40a53c6ed299&fmt=H With the proxy login that link becomes this: http://qe2a-proxy.mun.ca/Login?url=http://vnweb.hwwilsonweb.com/hww/jumpstart.jhtml?recid=0bc05f7a67b1790ea43489dcca60c352d8c5349eb783c137569b18e5e1c649c777df40a53c6ed299&fmt=H

  12. Proxy config file • Contains addresses for all restricted sites DJ psychiatryonline.org HJ saturn.bids.ac.uk DJ csa.com HJ ca1.csa.com HJ ca2.csa.com HJ sb2.abc-clio.com:81 HJ sb1.abc-clio.com DJ chass.utoronto.ca DJ mdconsult.com HJ webspirs1.micromedia.on.ca:8590 HJ webspirs.micromedia.ca:8590 …

  13. Proxy config file • Automatically generated from URLs in cataloguing records • If the domain name is not in the proxy config file, the resource will not be proxied http://qe2a-proxy.mun.ca/Login?url=http://mail.yahoo.com

  14. Potential Pitfalls Proxy server goes down and no-one (off campus *and* on-campus) can access any restricted resource. Adds a single point of failure for access to any restricted resource whether you are on-campus or not Increased traffic may result in slower remote access.
