Prelude • Political and religious tensions in the kingdom of Bohemia • The so-called “Majestat” (1609) neglected by the monarch’s absolute-style rule • First Defenestration of Prague (1618) • Nobility’s Election of a thirty member directorate • Ferdinand II. deposed by the Estates (1619) and Frederick of the Palatine (The Winter King) appointed as the new king  Faculty of Management and Economics

Defenestration • Two loyal Catholics thrown from the 2nd floor window of a castle • 17 meters fall survival attributed to holy intervention • Abortive demonstration of the nobles that the protest was not a direct aggression against the ruler • Emperor Mathias: The stage is set !  Faculty of Management and Economics

The Battle • Location: “Bílá hora “ - a small quiet hillside just outside Prague • Date: November 8, 1620 • Combatant 1: Bohemian Estate Armies led by: Prince Christian I. of Anhalt, Jindrich Mathias Thurn forces: 15,000 men from Bohemia and mercenaries • Combatant 2: united Imperial and Catholic League forces led by: Charles Bonaventura Buquoy, Maximilian of Bavaria forces: 27,000 troops from the Holy Roman Empire, the Catholic Ligue and Polland  Faculty of Management and Economics

The Aftermath • Two thousand lay dead or dying, others routed and captured • Freedom of religion came to an end, 27 noblemen executed • Protestants fleeing the country with king Frederick himself • Recatholicising • The End of the Thirty Years’ War in Bohemia  Faculty of Management and Economics
