36. Oxycontin to Heroin Use • Johnson County: • 2007 there were 15 Oxycontin/heroin overdose reports filed and 8 deaths • 2008 there were 24 Oxycontin/heroin overdoses reported, with 5 deaths • Through June 16, 2009 there were 22 Oxycontin/heroin overdoses reported with 6 deaths.

37. LOCK UP YOUR MEDS!!! • Most people don’t keep track of their medications • Monitor all medications in the home—prescription and OTC medicines. • Safely store medicines out of children’s reach and sight. Consider locking them up. • Get rid of old or unused medicines.

Proper Disposal of Prescription Drugs Federal Guidelines: • Take unused, unneeded, or expired prescription drugs out of their original containers and throw them in the trash. • Mixing prescription drugs with an undesirable substance, such as used coffee grounds or kitty litter, and putting them in impermeable, non-descript containers, such as empty cans or sealable bags, will further ensure the drugs are not diverted. • Flush prescription drugs down the toilet only if the label or accompanying patient information specifically instructs doing so.
