  1. Lesson Topic: Trips and Travel by Samia Soubra • Subject: Arabic • Grade: 8th Heritage Class • Unit Title: Travel and Famous Voyagers • Proficiency Level: Intermediate high • Time: 2 periods (45 min. each)

  2. Objective for knowledge: (Content) • Students will be able to determine the main idea and some details about Ibn Battuta from watching a video clip. • Students will recognize the different reasons for travel. • Students will recognize the importance of the famous Arab voyager, Ibn- Battuta. • Students will write the names of the countries that Ibn Battuta visited during his travel.

  3. Objective for communication: • Students will be roving in class to exchange personal opinions. They will be given a set of questions to ask each other in the target language. 1- What countries did you visit before? 2 - What countries do you like to visit in the future? Why? 3- Where are you going to spend your summer?

  4. Objective for control of form: • Students will be able to use masculine and feminine words correctly when asking each other questions.

  5. National Standards • Standard 1.1- Interpersonal Communication: Students engage in conversation, provide and obtain information, express feeling and emotion, and exchange opinions. • Standard 1.2 – Interpretive Communication: Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics. • Standard 3.1: Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the foreign language.

  7. Activating Prior Knowledge and Setting the stage: • This is the first lesson of the trip unit, soI will ask students: • Who loves traveling? • Why do we travel? • List some places you go to. The teacher will write students’ answers on the board. • Then, the teacher will read a riddle from TootaToota Magazine and the students should guess: Who is that person? Refer to the attached riddle. • The answer is: Ibn Battuta

  8. Activating Prior Knowledge and Setting the stage: • This is the first lesson of the trip unit, soI will ask students: • Who loves traveling? • Why do we travel? • List some places you go to. The teacher will write students’ answers on the board. • Then, the teacher will read a riddle from TootaToota Magazine and the students should guess: Who is that person? Refer to the attached riddle. • The answer is: Ibn Battuta

  9. Instruction: (6-8min.) • The teacher will show a PPT about her personal trips and the purposes of each trip. The teacher will talk about them.  • Interpersonal Activity: Collaborative learning (10-15 min.) • The purpose of this activity is to practice speaking in the target language. • Every 5 students will get one set of the same questions. Every set of questions represent a color. • Green set: Which countries did you visit before? (5 students) • Blue set: What countries do you like to visit in the future? Why? (6 students) • Red set: Where are you going to spend your summer? (5 students) • If students asked each other the green questions, they will move to the blue, then to the red. • Every student will get to ask and answer the three sets of questions.

  10. Ongoing Feedback: The teacher will be circulating around and making sure students are using the target language and on task. • Interpretive Activity: • Students will get a hand-out where there is a written text about Ibn Battuta with fill in the blanks from the word bank. • First, students will read the hand-out silently. • Second, they will ask me questions if something is not clear. • Third, students will listen to a video clip about Ibn Battuta and they will fill in the blanks while they are listening. • Fourth, the video clip will be repeated 2 to 3 times if necessary. • Fifth, the teacher will allow some time to work on the hand-out. • Sixth, students will work with their partners next to them to go over it. • Seventh, the teacher will discuss it and students will share their answers. • Eighth, students will look at the map of Ibn Battuta’s trips and they will discuss it together. • Ninth, the teacher will show a small segment presenting the countries Ibn Battuta visited. Students will write the name of countries on an index card.

  11. Informal/formal Assessment: • Hand-out 1 • Asking & answering questions. • Exit cards.

  12. Closure: (5min.) Students will be given index cards (exit cards). • Students will write 3 facts about Ibn Battuta and submit the exit card to the teacher. • Independent Practice: • Students will have a reading text about Ibn Battuta and they will answer questions about it. • How is that lesson related to the whole unit? • In the later lessons, we will be discussing the life of Abu Hamed Mohammad Alqaisi who was a voyager for 60 years wandering around many countries. Students will be able to identify the hardships these voyagers go through to document what they see and experience and teach others about their journeys.
