  1. Writing As Couch-Trip

  2. What is the function of writing? • Occupational therapy, self-help • To teach others what you have learned • To explore intellectually • To capture emotionally (to evoke)

  3. Why write creatively? Is it strictly “art for art’s sake”? • To entertain; to play: metaphor; sound-sense; word play • To create subtle appeals of language. • To appeal to the reader's imagination. • To create voices inside the reader's mind. • To inspire others. • To use as a rhetorical device.

  4. What makes readers connect to your writing? • Your honesty and vulnerability as a writer. • Your willingness to use writing as a process of discovery to you, rather than as a lecture to your readers. • Your creation of conflict and tension, either in your subject matter or your point of view: • Provocation Evocation

  5. What makes your writing “authentic”? • Your willingness to be open—both about your discovery of the meaning of your writing, and the admission of what you don't understand, yourself—gives your writing a core of authenticity. • Authenticity makes readers trust your use of artifice, because it will be used in the service of what you feel is “true” (i.e., conveys a truth)
