  1. New RedDot Template Featuresand Starting Up Your Site April 29, 2010

  2. University of Nebraska Medical Center Agenda • New Features of the RedDot Templates • New Template Demonstration • Starting a New RedDot Site

  3. University of Nebraska Medical Center New Features of theUNMC Web Templates

  4. University of Nebraska Medical Center Process • Since brand launch, ITS and PR have been working with dozens of departments to assess the needs for a new template design for the needs of UNMC’s diverse academic and administrative units. • We’ve also been collecting comments and observations about the application of the templates within many existing RedDot sites.

  5. University of Nebraska Medical Center Demonstrated Needs • Flexible – Need for increased flexibility and choice in terms of layout while supporting the core visual identity; ability to add and remove design elements on pages. • More Graphic – Increased need to include photographs in telling units’ stories; increased variety of pictures; ability to add new graphic elements easily. • More navigable – Ability to have menus to appear in new pages left-hand side without ITS involvement; clearer delineation of “levels” of a website. • Searchable – Improved performance and control of search through use of meta tags and search engine optimization

  6. University of Nebraska Medical Center Increased Flexibility • New list-based layout: Developers can now add, remove, change or shuffle page elements within the different areas of their pages to more fully customize the appearance and function of their site. • Change page layout on the fly: You may now create one (no left hand links), two (left hand links + body), or three (left hand links, body, right hand column) layouts from any page, even after it’s created. • Portlet library: Select and customize page elements from a built-in library of portlets. • Workflow: Limit the pages other web developers can edit, or restrict publishing and page review within your site to select individuals.

  7. University of Nebraska Medical Center Increased Graphic Elements • Expanded spaces for photos: Images can now be placed into set spaces at the home page and top page of each tab, with accompanying slideshow elements. • Automatically rotating images: Each time a visitor hits your page, they will see one image at random from all that are uploaded to the space, making your site seem fresher. • Graphical portlets: New portlets for giving and for creating your own buttons let you add more visual flair to your pages.

  8. University of Nebraska Medical Center Improved Navigability • Customized header graphic: You may now display your college and unit’s name at the top of each of your pages, rather than the basic UNMC header. • Department-defined tabs: Tabs can be set to reflect your department’s needs and focus areas, rather than those of the main site. • Breadcrumb links: The “breadcrumb” link trail at the top of each page guides back to your parent college and/or UNMC, showing your department’s place and ties to parent units. • Improved visual hierarchy: Distinct visual cues between the home, base, and content pages help visitors understand where and how deep they are in your site. • Add your own navigation links: The left hand navigation appears on new pages without contacting ITS.

  9. University of Nebraska Medical Center Improved Searchability • Control your site’s metadata: You can now add metadata such as page titles and descriptions which can improve your site’s performance in search (search engine optimization strategies will be covered in another training May 12). • New Google device: While not an upgrade to the template per se, our new Google search device on campus will allow us to create searches within individual sites as well as the entire campus.

  10. University of Nebraska Medical Center When Will I See Changes? • These demonstrated needs informed the basis of the new “department” template as it was built. • In the coming few months, these changes will be retroactively added to existing web templates – College; Institute; and WWW. • The new features will not require RedDot sites built in the new brand to be redone – will be added on republish. • However, the features will only be available to current RedDot sites, not CMS3, old RedDot, or “skinned” sites.

  11. University of Nebraska Medical Center Demonstration of the New Template Features

  12. University of Nebraska Medical Center Demonstrating the Site Examples of the new template in action: • http://www.unmc.edu/mmaf (live) • http://dev.unmc.edu/pharmacology/ (development) • http://dev.unmc.edu/orthosurgery/ (development)

  13. University of Nebraska Medical Center Page Types There are three types of page available in the new template, each with a different purpose and position within your site: • Index: The homepage of the site, which contains the slideshow. • Base: Used for each of the tabs of the site. Includes images at the top which rotate on refresh and a 2-3 column layout. Occasionally used for a front page for divisions, centers and labs. • Content: The “workhorse” template, used to house the bulk of your web pages. Can be set as one-, two-, or three- column layout.

  14. University of Nebraska Medical Center Index Page

  15. University of Nebraska Medical Center Base Page

  16. University of Nebraska Medical Center Content Page (One Column)

  17. University of Nebraska Medical Center Content Page (Two Columns)

  18. University of Nebraska Medical Center Content Page (Three Columns)

  19. University of Nebraska Medical Center Managing Your Pages The key tool for managing your pages can now be found at the top of each page in the “Foundation Page” menu. • Indicated by the yellow bar across the top of each page. • Where you manage slideshows/images, information in the orange space of your page, breadcrumb and link info, metadata, and portlets • At base and content pages, also lets you manage “child” links of that tab or menu item • On content pages, lets you change the page layout from one-, two-, or three-column to another.

  20. University of Nebraska Medical Center Slideshows Slideshows let you insert multiple images and/or accompanying text that change each time a visitor goes to that page. From the Foundation Page menu: • Index: “Edit promo images for slideshow” lets you add pictures, “Edit promo text for slideshow” lets you add text for each image, and “Edit promo title” lets you change the name of the field. Max 12 images. • Base: “Override default promo images” lets you add new images to replace the standards. Max 4 images.

  21. University of Nebraska Medical Center Page Promotional Text Promotional text is found at the top of each page, in the orange space. From the Foundation Page menu: • Index: “Edit promo text for slideshow” lets you set text on a per-image basis, which will be displayed with that image. • Base: “Override default promo headline” lets you control the large-type message (1 line, defaults to site name; should be same as tab name). “Override default promo text” lets you add further description using the small-type. • Content: “Override default promo headline,” as above.

  22. University of Nebraska Medical Center Page Headline Each page’s headline determines its identity when displayed as a link (either in left hand navigation or as a breadcrumb link), or as a page title shown in search. From the Foundation Page menu: • All pages: “Edit Headline” will change the link name associated with this page throughout the site, and acts as the default title shown in Google searches and as the title shown in the top-left corner and tab of a web browser.

  23. University of Nebraska Medical Center Metadata You may add additional information specifically for use by search engines to your pages. Metadata can improve your performance and ranking you receive from search engines like Google and Bing. From the Foundation Page menu: • All pages: “Edit headline” is the default title for your page, but can be overwritten using “Edit page ‘title’ tag” – titles are the link you click to see a page in Google. “Edit page description” lets you create a 255-character summary of your page that will appear directly below the link in search. Note: A training on metadata and search engine optimization will be offered on May 12.

  24. University of Nebraska Medical Center Add or Remove Portlets The new templates let you add, remove, or shuffle pieces of content within set spaces, such as the left and center columns of your page. From the Foundation Page menu: • All pages: “Manage left/center/right column container” lets you add, delete, or change the order of portlets available to the chosen space. This menu works virtually identically to the left-hand navigation menu. • A visual depiction of available portlets is available in Anne’s handout.

  25. University of Nebraska Medical Center Managing Left-Hand Navigation Management of left-hand navigation has been moved from the menus on the left to the Foundation Page menu. • Base or Content page: “Edit Page Sub-links” lets you manage all navigation (left hand) links that are child links of that page (that is, those that sit lower in the navigation tree or your site outline). A tab is the parent to all the bolded links that appear on the left hand side of a page. • Note that you manage sub-links from the parent page of those links (e.g. sublinks below a bolded link would be managed the bold linked page).

  26. University of Nebraska Medical Center Change Page Columns You may add or remove columns from a page as demanded by your site’s needs. From the Foundation Page menu: • Content: “Manage 1, 2, 3 column layout” will let you choose which appearance you want. 1 column has no navigation and is best for “dead end” pages like stories. 2 column is the default option, and has left hand links and a body. 3 column is used when you want to add content or portlets to a right hand sidebar. • Note if you turn off a column (such as changing from 3 column to 2 column) you do not lose the associations of content – it will still be there if you increase the columns you have later.

  27. University of Nebraska Medical Center Workflow This feature lets you set the rights of who may edit, review, and/or publish pages within your website. • Best used if you have many web developers who have limited or infrequent exposure and responsibilities to your website (such as an admin assistant who updates contact info once every six months) • Establishes gatekeepers for publishing for units whose message is tightly controlled or highly regulated • Workflow is set by roles, and thus can only be set up by working with Anne Faylor in ITS.
