Welcome to Beat The Market On Line, an innovative approach to

Active & Collaborative

Learning

A “picture is worth 1000 words”.

INCORPORATING

THE SIMULATION EXERCISES & GAMES

Into Your Course

BY TAKING A GUIDED TOUR

INCORPORATING THE SIMULATION

Exercises and/or Games

Depending on your teaching objectives and current course workload you may select options that will take from NO class time with minimal student homework to more extensive involvement. All exercises and games are AUTOMATICALLY GRADED

Here are the major

CHOICES

  • 1. Simulation Exercises Only: activelearning of concepts

  • 2. Games Only: managing firms, applying concepts, competing

  • 3. Combination of Simulation Exercises and Games

NEXT: Difference between Exercises and Games?

INCORPORATING THE SIMULATION

Exercises and/or Games

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES?

SIMULATION EXERCISES: Students learn specific microeconomic concepts by playing a set of controlled exercises by topic area in a dynamic environment utilizing the simulation. Students observe marketplace results and are graded on how well they comprehend economics, NOT their firm’s performance.

TIME: From 30 to 60 minutes for each exercise topic which contains a set of actions/questions. Automatically graded.

SIMULATION GAMES: Simulation Games enable students to apply multiple topics they have learned by managing a firm to maximize profits within a specific market structure. There are learning levels for each game so it can be used for introductory to advanced courses. Students may compete against computer managed firms, other students or a combination of both.TIME: average of 15-30 minutes per period of play. Assuming a 4 period game, a total of 1-2 hours should be allowed (may be over 1-2 weeks). Automatically graded.

NEXT: HOW TO SELECT EXERCISES

ASSIGN SIMULATION EXERCISES

All are Automatically Graded

Understand the majoreconomic concepts

first.

NEXT, lets

see the

LearningObjectives

That’s easy, all I do is select the topics I want, due dates

& decide if it is

practice or graded.

Then learn the

Market structure’s

behavior.

CHOICE

1. INCORPORATING ONLY THE SIMULATION EXERCISES

These simulation exercises are great because they require

“active learning”, involving dynamic market environments.

Cool dude, but can we play one game?

CHOICE

2. INCORPORATING ONLY THE SIMULATION GAMES

Simulation Games have learning levels and can be made very simple or more advanced.

Yet they all share some

Common Objectives

AUTOMATICALLY

GRADED

Common Objectives

  • Making economics relevant

  • Motivating students

  • Applying microeconomic analysis to make decisions to maximize profits.

  • Comprehending how each specific market behaves & reaches equilibrium

  • Sharpening critical thinking skills

  • Practicing the decision making process

2. SELECTING SIMULATION GAMES

Here is a matrix to help you select the game or games that are right for your course.

for suggestions on combinations of Games & Exercises

The matrix does NOT include games

for learning levels 4 and 5.

3. Combination of Simulation Exercises and Games

If time permits we recommend a

combination of Simulation Exercises & Games.

Students are more motivated

to do well when they

know a game is coming

Clarify Specific

Topics in a

Dynamic Environment

A POWERFUL COMBINATION!

CHOICE

3. Combination of Simulation Exercises and Games

Because of time constraints & different teaching objectives, only you can decide which simulation exercises & games

FIT BEST FOR YOUR COURSEbut we can offer suggestions

FOUR SUGGESTIONS FOLLOW TO HELP GUIDE YOU

  • Limited Time and Simplest Game

  • Limited Time and Game with Supply & Demand decisions

  • Time for Two Games with different market structures & related exercises

  • Long Run Decision Making with Simplest Game

1. Limited time & Simplest Game

Supply side focused in theshort term with fixed

plant size.

3. Combination of Simulation Exercises and Games

This choice accomplisheda lot by having both demand& supply but it is also

short term focused with

a fixed plant size.

2. Supply & Demand concepts

with LIMITED TIME & only ONE GAME

Suggested Selections

3. Combination of Simulation Exercises and Games

This is my favorite choicebecause many concepts learned in the exercises can be applied to BOTHmarket structure games.

3. Time for TWO GAMES with

different market structures

4. Long Run Decision Making

with SIMPLEST GAME

Game includes only supply

side decisions making it

easier for long term

analysis.
