  1. “Of all the questions regularly asked about Jesus, the question ‘Why did Jesus die?’ must be among the most frequent. It is certainly the most fascinating.” ~ N. T. Wright, Historian

  2. “The murder of Jesus was a vast conspiracy involving Rome, Herod, the Gentiles, and the Jewish Sanhedrin. It is significant that the crucifixion of Christ is the only historical event where all those factions worked together to achieve a common goal.” ~ John MacArthur, The Murder Of Jesus

  3. “The most certain and well-attested fact about Jesus of Nazareth is that he was tried, sentenced and executed by the Roman procurator Pontius Pilate on a charge of high treason.” ~ Albert Nolan, Jesus Before Christianity

  4. “It is no surprise, in view of his teachings and actions, that Jesus was crucified. What is surprising is that it did not happen sooner.” ~ Ben Witherington III, Historian & Theologian

  5. “Jesus was condemned to death, not by the irreligious and the uncivilized, but by the highest representatives of Jewish religion and Roman law.” ~ James Montgomery Boice

  6. “What killed Jesus was not irreligion, but religion itself; not lawlessness, but precisely the law; not anarchy, but the upholders of order.” ~ Martin Robinson, Historian

  8. “Jesus seemed to specialize in using shock therapy with the religious. He was fearless in putting His divine finger on the faults of the faithful. He did not sugarcoat His message.” ~ Tom Hovestol, Extreme Righteousness: Seeing Ourselves in the Pharisees

  9. “The Pharisees were good, faithful, religious people of their day. And it is good, faithful, religious people of every era who find themselves in conflict with Jesus.” ~ Beverly Roberts Gaventa

  10. “If we acknowledge that the Pharisees were the respectable, pious people of the time, then we have to admit that Jesus had little patience with respectable, pious people.” ~ William C. Placher, New Testament Scholar

  11. “It is curious that people who are filled with horrified indignation whenever a cat kills a sparrow can hear the story of the killing of God told Sunday after Sunday and not experience any shock at all.” ~ Dorothy Sayers

  12. Then the Pharisees called a meeting and discussed plans for killing Jesus. ~ Matthew 12:14 (NLT)

Dos-and-don’ts-ism has the advantage that you don’t need wisdom. You don’t have to think subtly or make hard choices.” ~ Robert C. Roberts, Theologian
