  2. PADF • Positive impact on 5.6 million people in 18 countries in FY 2009 • Created 47 years ago as an affiliate of the OAS • More than 350 people working in Colombia, Haiti and elsewhere to improve lives of disadvantaged people in the hemisphere

  3. PADF in Haiti • 28 years of experience in Haiti • 836,000 direct beneficiaries in FY 2009 • Focus on long-term impact using community engagement • 60% of projects implemented with the Haitian government

  4. OVERVIEW Disasters • The natural disaster and humanitarian relief arm of the OAS • Assisted more than 16 countries during the last two years • Engages the public and private sectors in mitigation, relief and reconstruction

  5. DMERP & DMA Disasters • Disaster Management and Emergency Relief Program (DMERP) • Engages the private sector in relief efforts • Disaster Management Alliance (DMA) • Regional program that focuses on mitigation

  6. DMERP RELIEF IN HAITI Disasters • Disaster and humanitarian relief to more than 549,000 Haitians in Fiscal Years 08 & 09

  7. DMERP RELIEF IN HAITI Disasters • Medical supplies, basic necessities & 20 cargo containers of food • Reconstructed 14 schools for 6,000 children • Provided school kits, first aid kits and rehabilitated community spaces

  8. AGRICULTURAL RELIEF & REHABILITATION Disaster Relief • Provided seeds, tools and livestock to rebuild the agricultural sector • Rehabilitated watersheds and irrigation systems in local communities • Developed pilot agro-projects for 500 rural and urban families

  9. DMA Disaster Mitigation • Disaster Management Alliance is a nine-country initiative • Integrates private sector into mitigation • Training, capacity building, technical support and other engineering support to partners and beneficiaries

  10. DMA Disaster Mitigation • Haiti joined the DMA in 2006 and is very active • A major conference in Port-au-Prince on November 20 to 22 that will build awareness and mitigate damages from seismic and other natural disasters

  11. SPECIAL HAITI PROGRAM Disaster Mitigation • PUGRD: Emergency Response, Disaster Mitigation and Preparedness • Works with the Department of Civil Protection • Focus on Gonaives region

  12. HAITI SPECIAL PROGRAM Disaster Mitigation • Practice drills and procedures for disaster preparedness, response and recovery • Communities improve construction methods, watershed management techniques, and other community infrastructure

  13. DISASTER MITIGATION AND EMERGENCY RESPONSE Conclusion • Partners with the public and private sectors, as well as international organizations, to prepare communities for natural disasters • Responds to natural disasters and humanitarian relief situations in the Western Hemisphere
