  3. Chris Wright – The Bio Christopher Geoffrey Wright was born on 7 May, 1988, in Cairns, Queensland. He began competitive swimming at 7 years of age. With backstroke as his favored stroke, Chris stood out as an obvious talent. However, at the age of ten, he took a shine to the complex and challenging stroke of butterfly and has never looked back. Chris represented three different clubs before moving to Brisbane at the age of 18, when the lure of international competition and the dream of representing Australia became a real possibility. In 2008 Chris’s career began to build momentum, as he made his first world short course team. The following year, he went on to set a national record at the Australian World Short Course Championships in Hobart for the 200m butterfly. So impressive was his swim, the record time of 1:51:11 still stands today. That same year Chris made his first long course team, in which he competed at the World Championships in Rome. Big things were starting to happen for the talented swimmer, still only 22 years of age, when he caught the eye of the Australian swimming elite in 2010. Chris qualified to compete at the 2010 New Delhi Commonwealth Games in the 100m and 200m butterfly, where he placed an agonising fourth in both events - just outside the medal tallies. After such bittersweet success in New Delhi, Chris set London firmly in his sights from 2011. However, his determination was interrupted by a back injury that kept him out of the pool and gym. He thus, unfortunately, missed the 2011 World Championship Trials and the bulk of the swim season. However, patience and hard work prevailed when, in 2012, he achieved his dream of representing Australia at the Olympic Games. At the trials in Adelaide his time of 51.67 in the 100m butterfly was a personal best for Chris and was the fastest time of the year in the world at the time.

  4. Chris Wright – Results Australian Olympic Swimming Trials: 15–22 March 2012, Adelaide 200m Butterfly – 1:56.40 Despite a severe case of nerves and a competitive field, Chris booked his spot on the 2012 Australian Olympic Team when he finished second in the 200m Butterfly. 100m Butterfly – 51.67
Chris secured his second individual swim in the Men’s 100m Butterfly, with a personal best time. Lining up against swimming greats such as Geoff Huegill and Michael Klim, Chris ensured he would be the next household name in Australian swimming. 50m Butterfly – 23.79
Chris swam another personal best time for the 50m Butterfly at the Trials, by swimming under 24 seconds. By winning this event, he claimed his first National Long Course title.

  5. Chris Wright – The Press Cairns swimmer Chris Wright heading to Olympics Murray Wenzel Tuesday, March 20, 2012 The Cairns Post HONING his skills at Saints Swimming Club, where the pool is not even Olympic distance, does not sound like the breeding ground for a champion. But the humble Parramatta Park facility has proved just that for Cairns' latest sporting star, Chris Wright. The 23-year-old, who took his first stroke in the water in a learn to swim class at Edmonton, will wear the Australian colours in London after booking an Olympic berth with silver in the 200m butterfly on Sunday night. Wright's teenage years were spent in the 33m-long Saints pool, under the tutelage of coach Glen Evans. It was there that the laidback Wright realised if he worked hard enough, dreams of representing Australia at an Olympic Games could become a reality. Wright, 23, claimed the race in 51.67, with Jayden Hadler (52.09) edging out Matt Targett (52.24) and Nick D'Arcy (52.47) for the second individual spot. His victory came despite a serious back injury last year that saw him almost retire from the sport. "I think I've come back stronger (from the injury). I'm just stoked to get on the team and to get two swims," Wright said. Earlier in the week, Wright qualified for the 200m butterfly when he finished second behind Nick D'Arcy. Geoff Huegil'’s Olympic hopes were dashed when the 33-year-old finished fifth in 52.50, falling short of the top-two finish needed to extend his remarkable return to a third Games.
